Voting for the Ambala Municipal Corporation elections on Sunday passed off peacefully, recording a 54.4% turnout, lower than the 56% polling registered in December 2020.
District election officer-cum-deputy commissioner Ajay Singh Tomar said polling was held for the post of mayor and 20 wards. He said there are 1,98,224 voters under the MC jurisdiction, including 1,02,654 men, 95,550 women and 20 transgender voters.
“After the peaceful polling process, polling parties deposited EVMs and election-related material at designated counters in the strong room set up at OPS Vidya Mandir School, Sector 9, Ambala City,” he said.
Counting of votes will take place on May 13.
As many as 65 candidates are in the fray for the 20 wards, while three candidates are contesting for the mayoral post reserved for Backward Class-B (woman).
The BJP has fielded Akshita Saini, 32, while the Congress candidate is Kulwinder Kaur, 60. Sonia Rani is contesting as an Independent backed by the AAP and INLD.
Senior leaders, including Ambala Congress MP Varun Chaudhary, Rajya Sabha MP Kartikeya Sharma, Kalka BJP MLA Shakti Rani Sharma and former minister Venod Sharma, cast their votes at their respective booths.
