The accused, Vikas, alias Sanju, of Ladwa, was apprehended after a shootout on Indri Road on Sunday night, they added. He reportedly sustained two bullet wounds to his back. He was admitted to a hospital and his condition is reportedly stable.

The victim, a UHBVN clerk, was shot dead on Friday afternoon and a probe was underway.

Karnal deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Sandeep Kumar said that the accused was serving a 20-year sentence in a murder case lodged at Kurukshetra and was out on parole. “CIA-1 received information regarding Vikas’s whereabouts, and a naka-bandi was set up. The accused opened fire at the police party first. In self-defence, the police retaliated and he sustained two bullet injuries,” he added. He is a parole jumper, Kumar added.

Although police have yet to disclose the motive behind the killing, sources said Vikas was hired as a contract killer.
