The victim, Gurpreet Singh, 31, a resident of Jalandhar, had been missing since June 22. His family filed a missing person complaint with the Jalandhar Cantt police station a day later.

Assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Kulwinder Singh said while tracking Gurpreet’s movement through CCTV cameras after he went missing, he was seen entering a garbage dump on the night of June 22.

During further investigation, police zeroed-in on Gurpreet’s friend Ravi Kumar, a JCB driver, who confessed to killing him, the ACP added.

Detailing the motive, the official said the accused revealed they had a heated argument during a drinking session and he killed Gurpreet in a fit of rage. He then dug a pit at the garbage dump and buried the body to conceal it.

Following the disclosure, police exhumed the body and moved it to the civil hospital for autopsy. The accused has been booked for murder under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
