In an unprecedented move, mayor Inderjit Kaur ordered all municipal officials to leave the Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) meeting, leaving only elected representatives to review key proposals behind closed doors, on Wednesday.

MC commissioner, mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor were present. The F&CC meeting was held at the mayor’s house near Rose Garden, with an agenda listing 160 proposals related to municipal governance. The session, which began around 11 am, included senior officials from departments such as buildings and roads (B&R), operations & maintenance (O&M), property tax, and Tehbazaari.

Initially, the meeting proceeded as usual, and 24 proposals were read. However, just as the 25th proposal was about to be discussed, the mayor and municipal commissioner exchanged a few words, following which the mayor issued a direct order for all officials to leave the room immediately.

Taken aback, superintending engineers (SE), executive engineers (XEN), and other officials exited and waited in another room while the mayor, municipal commissioner, senior deputy mayor, and deputy mayor continued the meeting, reviewing and approving several proposals on their own.

Mayor Inderjit Kaur maintained, “Meeting got lengthy as it got started at 11 am and we asked officials to leave so that they can do their work at their respective offices”.

F&CC meeting to continue on Thursday

Due to time constraints, not all proposals could be addressed on Wednesday and the meeting will resume on Thursday at 1 pm. This unusual development has sparked widespread discussion within the MC.

381 proposals under consideration

While the original agenda listed 160 proposals, an additional 221 proposals were introduced as table agenda items, bringing the total number of proposals to 381.

By the end of Wednesday’s meeting, approximately 220 proposals had been reviewed, with six rejected and several put on hold. The session continued until 4 pm, with key financial and administrative decisions taken in the absence of municipal officials.
