Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has pegged losses at over ₹1.61 crore after Sunday’s thunderstorm damaged electricity infrastructure across Ludhiana, affecting transformers, poles and feeders citywide.
A damage assessment report prepared by PSPCL’s Central Zone stated that at least 71 distribution transformers and 187 electricity poles were damaged during the storm. Several components of the overhead distribution system also suffered losses.
The storm, accompanied by strong winds, led to large-scale feeder tripping after trees and heavy branches fell on power lines at multiple locations. Nearly 40 feeders were affected at the peak of the disruption, resulting in prolonged outages in residential and commercial areas.
The worst-hit divisions included Estate, Agar Nagar, Model Town, Janta Nagar, City West and Jagraon, where officials reported extensive infrastructure damage. PSPCL said faults surfaced simultaneously in urban as well as suburban areas, making restoration work more arduous.
Of the damaged poles, 168 were nine-metre structures and 19 were eleven-metre poles. Several transformers of varying capacities were also affected after trees and branches collapsed on distribution lines and supporting infrastructure.
Chief engineer Jagdev Singh Hans said the scale of damage was unusually large as almost every division reported faults at the same time.
