The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Monday urged the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) to take steps to stop discharge of untreated sewage into the Sirhind Canal.
In a representation to the board, party leader Daljit Singh Cheema alleged that untreated sewage and contaminated wastewater generated within the jurisdiction of Rupnagar Municipal Council was being discharged into the canal, whose water was used for drinking water as well as irrigation supply.
“If verified, such discharge represents a serious threat to public health, aquatic ecology, agriculture and the quality of the state’s water resources,” the representation said.
It called for an inspection of the Rupnagar MC sewage system, sewage treatment plants, outlets and illegal discharge points, along with determining the persons responsible for causing or permitting the illegal pollution and initiating appropriate action under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974.
