Streetlight scam: Punjab and Haryana HC grants interim protection to Sandeep Sandhu, others

The high court bench of justice Gurvinder Singh Gill has granted anticipatory bail to Sandeep Singh Sandhu, Gaurav Sharma (a local businessman), Harpreet Singh (allegedly an associate of Sandhu). Lakhwinder Singh (a panchayat samite chairman) and Satvinder Singh Kang (BDPO), who have been arrested, also secured the bail.
Vigilance Bureau (VB) had on September 27 registered a criminal case in the alleged misappropriation of ₹65-lakh government grant meant for installation of streetlights in 26 villages of Sidhwan Bet, Dakha sub-division, Ludhiana.
The high court in its order observed that the challan already stands presented and conclusion of trial is likely to consume time and has not even commenced till date. In the case of Sandhu, the court observed that even though he was OSD to the former CM, but he was not holding any office now. In these circumstances, it cannot be said that Sandhu and Harpreet Singh were holding any position to have exercised any kind of undue influence, the court added.
