Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday expressed grief over the death of a two-year-old girl who fell into an open drain in Mukundpur, Bhalswa Dairy and ordered officials to take strict action in the case, officials said.

“The safety of every citizen, especially children, is our top priority. Such negligence is unacceptable in any circumstances,” she said. (@BJP4Delhi)

Calling the incident extremely distressing, Gupta said negligence of this nature would not be tolerated. Following her directions, the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) department dismissed a contractual junior engineer with immediate effect.

Officials said Gupta has directed all departments to conduct an immediate survey to identify open drains and other hazardous locations within their jurisdictions and ensure corrective measures. She also warned of strict action against those responsible for lapses.

She conveyed her condolences to the family and said the government stands with them in this difficult time. She added that preventing similar incidents in the future would be the most meaningful way to honour the child’s memory, officials said.
