Delhi University may relax publication requirement for 4-yr UG batch to enter PhD programme

The University of Delhi is considering relaxing the publication-related criteria for the 2022-2026 four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP) batch to enter the PhD programme, university registrar Vikas Gupta told HT on Friday.

On July 31, HT reported that the criteria for students from the FYUP to be eligible for direct admission to the PhD programme included having completed an overall CGPA of 7.5 and having published papers in SCOPUS (a citation database for peer-reviewed literature journals).

“The CGPA requirement will remain mandatory. However, as a one-time measure, the University of Delhi is considering a relaxation of the publication-related criteria for the 2022–26 FYUP batch. Under this proposal, students may be given additional time to get their work published. The proposed relaxation would only apply to admission to PhD programmes and not to the award of the PhD,” DU registrar Vikas Gupta told HT.

DU approved direct admissions to its PhD programmes for students who have completed a FYUP under the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF) 2022 in July, in its executive council (EC) meeting.

Multiple EC members, students, and teachers from the university had opposed it, stating that the move would hinder students’ academic growth, dilute the value of the postgraduate programme, and pose doubts on the credibility of PhD students.
