New Delhi: The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will take over maintenance of roads in the Central Vista area from the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) — nearly two decades after the central agency was given the project — according to an order issued by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on Friday.

The ministry’s memorandum said the NDMC will take responsibility for the upkeep, cleaning and other general municipal works on all roads in Central Vista area.

“Now, it has been decided that the maintenance of all roads in the Central Vista area, excluding Kartavya Path, will be transferred to the NDMC from CPWD. This includes all upkeep, cleaning, and general municipal duties,” the order, seen by HT, said.

Notably, the civic body already handles road-related and municipal services across much of Lutyens’ Delhi.

To recall, the maintenance of Central Vista was transferred from the NDMC to the CPWD in 2007, following a ministry order in December 2006.
