An unidentified suspect has been booked for allegedly downloading paid videos of a private coaching centre and selling them at discounted rates on online platforms, Gurugram police said on Friday.

Police said the suspect purchased a subscription for a course by online tutorial EdSarrthi, some 15 days ago. The suspect recorded all the coaching sessions and copied the contents under a fake name and downloaded videos and shared them on online platforms via Telegram, Google drive and YouTube.

Jasvir Singh, station house officer (SHO) of Cyber Crime police station, said the unidentified person was selling the course videos to other aspiring students at discounted prices. “The student attended the coaching classes only to run an organised racket by copying data, downloading and extracting the contents. We have registered a case and will identify his location through his IP address,” he said.

Nitish Pandey, the chief operating officer of EdSarrthi, a Delhi-based tutorial firm, said they provide coaching to Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) aspirants. “Recently, we launched a module course for the general studies paper of the preliminary exams One student was found recording and selling our courses at a minimal price. We approached this person and asked him to refrain from doing it as the product is licenced and belongs to us, but he completely ignored our request. He even threatened us and said he will continue to sell them,” he said.

SHO Singh said, “We are yet to identify the suspect and he possibly registered himself with the online tutorial on a fake name”.

A case under Section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 66D of the Information Technology (IT) Act was registered at Cyber Crime police station in Gurugram on Thursday, police added.
