KOLKATA: The Calcutta high court on Thursday ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the death of a Trinamool Congress worker in alleged police firing in Hooghly district in 2010.
“The victim, Rabin Ghosh, was shot in February 2010 during a school managing committee election at Hooghly’s Jangipara. The incident happened when TMC and CPI(M) workers clashed over the election. His family alleged that a police officer posted at the spot shot Ghosh with a service weapon,” a lawyer said, requesting anonymity.
The then CPI(M) government ordered the state criminal investigation department (CID) to probe the death but its report submitted at Hooghly’s Serampore court ruled out the involvement of police, the lawyer added.
On Thursday, justice Tirthankar Ghosh ordered the CBI to start a fresh probe.
Latika Ghosh, the victim’s wife, told the media after Thursday’s court order that she was convinced that a police officer was guilty. “We want justice. A police officer killed my husband,” she said.
