Uttar Pradesh will start administering Covid vaccine to children aged between 12 and 14 years from Wednesday.
“UP has approximately 1.34 crore beneficiaries in the age group of 12 to 14 years. They will be administered a dose of Corbevax vaccine,” said Dr Ajai Ghai, immunisation officer, Uttar Pradesh.
Announcing the fresh vaccination drive, chief minister Yogi Adityanath tweeted, “Under the leadership of respected Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji, from the coming March 16, the facility of Covid vaccination for children in the age group of 12 and 14 years and precaution dose for all people of 60+ age is going to start.”
Officials said separate booths are likely for vaccination of children in age group of 12 and 14 years as their vaccine is different from that of the other age groups.
Dr Abhishek Shukla, secretary general, Association of International Doctors, said: “This is best opportunity for children to get protected against the Covid virus with the vaccine, which has protected the people. This was evident during the third wave of Covid that was short lived in Uttar Pradesh.”
Health officials said a decision regarding separate booths for children between 12 and 14 years of age will be taken on Tuesday. “The final guidelines will be framed by Monday night after which we will decide the number of booths that will be set up for vaccinating children between 12 and 14 years of age,” said Dr Ghai.
Uttar Pradesh has received the first lot of 85 lakh doses of Corbevax vaccine, he said. More vaccine doses shall come next week or in ten days, hence vaccination will not be stalled for any reason.
“Already over 10,000 vaccination booths are active in the state and a maximum 17,000 were active when vaccination was at its peak so vaccinating children will be an issue in the state,” said Dr Shukla.
