Lucknow Municipal Corporation makes 144 city crossings garbage free

LMC officials have also decided to place dustbins at every 50 to 100 metre distance for collection of garbage in main markets of the city

Ahead of upcoming Holi festival, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has made 144 crossings of the city garbage free. “LMC has already launched a massive sanitation drive in the city to clean places where ‘Holika Dahan’ (symbolic burning of demoness Holika on the eve of Holi) takes place. During festivals, we clean our homes so it is the duty of LMC to clean the whole city,” said municipal commissioner Ajay Dwivedi.

“We also held a meeting on participation and improving the ranking of Lucknow in the national sanitation index. All the additional municipal commissioners , zonal officers, nagar swasthya adkhikari, sanitation supervisors, garden superintendents and concerned officials participated in the online meeting,” he added.

During the meeting, LMC officials decided to place dustbins at every 50 to 100 metre distance for collection of garbage in main markets of the city. These bins would be divided into three parts for collection of different types of garbage. All the garbage collection points would be dismantled and waste would be carried directly to the waste landfill site, Dwivedi said.

Signages would be placed indicating the importance of sanitation and placement of bins. The LMC officials also decided to paint all dividers and plant saplings for promoting greenery. Pots with plants would be placed where the dividers are narrow. Any sort of encroachment would be removed near the dividers.

On the occasion of World Toilet Day on November 19, 2020 union ministry of housing and urban affairs had launched the Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge-2021. It is aimed at preventing hazardous cleaning of sewers and septic tanks and to promote mechanised cleaning.
