A day of jubilation turned into mourning for the family of a doctor who succumbed on Sunday to injuries he suffered after a parcel bomb meant for his father – a senior postal department officer in Sagar district – exploded on January 25.

Dr Ritesh Dixit (30) who was to get engaged on Sunday was seriously injured when the parcel bomb fitted inside an FM radio exploded on Thursday. He was referred to Bhopal for advanced treatment where he died Sunday morning. Police claim it is the first of its kind case in Madhya Pradesh.

The accused, Hemant alias Ashish Sahu (25), a high school pass out from Sagar had allegedly prepared the parcel bomb after scouring Google and rigged it inside an FM radio to take revenge on KK Dixit, who is principal superintendent at the main post office in Sagar.

Dixit had instituted an inquiry against Ashish who was working as a temporary employee in the postal department a few years ago and had filed an FIR against him and a few others for an alleged fraud of Rs 38 lakh.

Additional superintendent of police Sagar RS Yadav confirmed that Dr Ritesh Dixit succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a Bhopal hospital. “Now the accused whom we have arrested will be charged with murder under section 302 of Indian Penal Code,” he said.

According to one of the deceased’s friends, Dr Ritesh who was posted at Sagar district hospital was to get engaged to a dental surgeon from Gwalior on Sunday.

Police investigation revealed that KK Dixit had received the parcel on January 24 from his driver at his residence after it was originally delivered to his office. On January 24, Dixit went out of town for some official work and the parcel remained unopened.

He returned home on January 25. Dixit was on the third floor and his son Ritesh with two others were on the second floor. Police said Ritesh opened the parcel and found an FM radio. When he connected it to a plug point, it exploded. A relative and a domestic help were also injured in the explosion.

The police found that parcel was sent from Sagar’s Namak Mandi post office on January 23. A thorough probe that included scrutinizing CCTV footages from nearby government and private buildings led them to zero in on Rajesh Patel and Moolchand Lohar who had sent the parcel from the post office to KK Dixit. Both are friends of Ashish Sahu.

The two revealed that Ashish, a resident of Singhna village in Sagar had prepared the parcel and had given it to them to post it.

Police claimed that following his arrest on January 26, Ashish told them he carried out the parcel bomb attack in revenge against Dixit who had ordered an inquiry against him in the alleged fraud. An FIR had been lodged and about Rs 3.5 lakh were seized from Ashish. He had spent some time in jail before getting bail. He was currently unemployed.
