IIM Mumbai was founded two years ago, replacing the National Institute for Training in Industrial Engineering (NITIE). It currently offers three MBA programs: General MBA, MBA in Operations and Supply Chain Management, and MBA in Sustainability Management. The number of applications for each programme this year is as follows: General MBA: 2,69,356 applications, MBA in Operations and Supply Chain Management: 77,618 applications and MBA in Sustainability Management: 2,12,913 applications.

In contrast, the previous year saw significantly lower numbers, with 9,430 applications for General MBA, 2,665 for MBA in Operations and Supply Chain Management, and 1,439 for MBA in Sustainability Management. Women comprised approximately 30% of applicants last year, numbering 3,486.

According to professor Vivek Khanzode, dean of academics at IIM Mumbai, this year’s spike in applications highlights the institute’s rising appeal among MBA aspirants. With only 540 seats available—330 for General MBA, 180 for MBA in Operations and Supply Chain Management, and 30 for MBA in Sustainability Management—competition for admission has intensified significantly.

Looking ahead, IIM Mumbai plans to expand its academic offerings. The institute is set to introduce several new programs, including, A one-year executive postgraduate program in Urban Logistics and Infrastructure Management for working professionals. A one-year executive postgraduate program in Public Policy Management. A one-year programme in Financial Economics and Management in collaboration with the National Stock Exchange (NSE). A one-year executive postgraduate program in partnership with Coal India Ltd.
