Mumbai government offices closed, private establishments asked to allow work-from-home amid heavy rain

Several areas of Mumbai and its suburbs are waterlogged due to continuous downpour since Tuesday morning.

All the government and semi-government offices in Mumbai will remain closed on Tuesday, August 19, due to heavy rain, the city's civic body Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation announced.

The private offices in the city have also been asked to allow work-from-home for Tuesday, given that there has been heavy rainfall since early morning.

“All government and semi-government offices in Mumbai will remain closed today, August 19, 2025. Private offices/establishments are requested to instruct their employees to work from home,” BMC said in a post on X.

However, all essential services will continue to work as usual. The BMC said that the India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert warning for Mumbai, meaning that the city is likely to witness extremely heavy rainfall throughout the day.

It added that all private offices in the city are “urgently” requested to allow their employees to work from home and avoid “unnecessary” travel.

“Furthermore, all private offices and establishments in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region are urgently requested to instruct their employees to work from home, depending on the nature of their operations, and to avoid unnecessary travel, as appealed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation,” it said.

Several areas of the city and its suburbs are waterlogged due to continuous downpour since Tuesday morning. Early morning visuals show commuters struggling to make their way through waterlogged roads in areas such as Atal Setu, Kopar, Chembur and more.

All the schools and colleges in the city and its suburbs are also closed on Tuesday due to the extreme weather.
