NAVI MUMBAI: A Mumbai Police team was brutally attacked while attempting to arrest accused persons in a drug trafficking case near Shagun Chowk in Ulwe around midnight on Saturday. Four people, including an assistant police inspector, sustained serious injuries in the incident.
The injured policemen have been identified as assistant police inspector Kiran Mandhare, police personnel Atul Jaiswal, and civilians Ahmedraza Qureshi and Firoz Siddiqui. All four are currently undergoing treatment in a hospital.
According to the police, the Mankhurd police team had received a tip-off that Ismail Sheikh and Shahid Khan, wanted in an NDPS-related case, were staying at a hotel in Ulwe. Acting on the information, the team set up a trap at Shagun Chowk but allegedly failed to inform the Navi Mumbai police before launching the operation.
When the police attempted to apprehend the accused, their associates allegedly gathered at the spot and attacked the team using hockey sticks, swords, choppers and a country-made firearm. During the assault, valuables worth about ₹1.80 lakh were looted, said a police officer.
