The hill station of Mussoorie woke up to a tense Thursday morning after a day of protests and slogan shouting by BJP and Hindu organisations over a local Kashmiri trader allegedly sharing a Pakistani patriotic song on his Facebook profile.
President of the BJP Youth wing Rajesh Rawat lodged a complaint with the police against Kashmiri trader Manzoor Ahmed. Circle Officer Rameshwar Prasad Dimri said police are investigating the matter.
“We have received a complaint. So far we have confiscated the mobile phone of the trader who allegedly shared the post. We are investigating the matter” CO Dimri told HT on Thursday.
Members of the BJP and the Hindu Jagran Manch (HJM) protested through the day in Mussoorie against the trader and threatened to not let him open his shop until the investigation was complete. There are five or six shops in Kulri market in central Mussoorie and local residents say they are scared of a further escalation in tensions.
This is the second such incident in a month in the Uttarakahand town involving Kashmiris. Last month, local traders asked Kashmiri businessmen to leave the town after few minority youth allegedly celebrated Pakistan’s victory over India in the finals of the Champion’s Trophy last month. Mussoorie has no history of communal tensions.
