Nagar Nigam Councillor, relative shot dead in UP’s wild west
Meerut’s reputation as a place where criminals often act with impunity was further cemented on Sunday when motorcycle borne gunmen shot dead a councillor and his relative.cities Updated: Jul 10, 2017 09:55 IST
Four motorcycle borne criminals barged into a saloon and shot dead a Nagar Nigam councillor Arif Mohammad and his relative on Sunday evening in Kotwali area of the old city.
While Arif died on the spot, Shadab, the relative, who was admitted to a hospital in critical state, died later in the night,police said. The preliminary probe has revealed that personal enmity could be the reason behind the murders and the police have formed teams to nab the suspects. Both the victims were in their 30s.
“It seems that personal enmity could be behind the crime and we were investigating the case from all possible angles,” said Maan Singh Chauhan, SP of city area.
The incident occurred at around 7:30 pm near Kasai Wali Mosque. Arif who was a councillor from Wrad 66 had gone for a hair cut along with Shadab motorcycle borne criminals barged into the saloon and pumped at least six bullets on Arif`s head at point blank range. Shadab also sustained bullet injuries when he came to Arif’s help.
The shooters than escaped from the spot brandishing their weapons. Initial investigation suggests that Arif`s nephew Salman could be behind the murder. Salman is a history sheeter of Kotwali area and has a rivalry with Shariq who is relative of Arif.
Police sent Arif’s body for post mortem and deployed heavy force near his house in Ismailnagar locality to prevent any clash between supporters of the two families. The funerals are scheduled to take place Monday afternoon.
