Heavy rain causes waterlogging, triggers traffic snarls in Noida, Ghaziabad

According to India Meteorological Department data, the Noida KVK Chholas station recorded 70mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8.30am on Monday and another 0.5mm of rain till 5.30pm.

While it brought brief respite, the maximum temperature and humidity in GB Nagar remained high, around 33°C and 99%, respectively. The minimum temperature was recorded at 24.8°C.

Weather expert Mahesh Palawat said the current spell was linked to the prevailing monsoon systems over north India and could continue to bring intermittent rain over parts of the National Capital Region (NCR). “The monsoon trough and associated weather systems are supporting rainfall activity over the region. We can expect intermittent showers, with the intensity varying across different parts of NCR,” said Palawat, vice-president, Climate and Meteorology at Skymet Weather.

Stretches around Chilla, Barola and parts of Sector 100 in Noida, as well as Tilapta Main Road in Greater Noida also saw water accumulation.

“The roads and surrounding areas have become difficult to navigate in places,” said Arpit Agrawal, a resident of Sector 46, Noida.

“There was a lot of water on the roads around Sector 62 Metro station after the rain. For people coming out of the station, walking through the water and finding a clear stretch to cross the road became difficult,” said Amit Kumar, a commuter.

Officials of the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation said that there was minor waterlogging for a brief period after a spell of rain on Monday morning.

“The water drained within an hour, as it did not rain heavily. Our teams were working continuously at all 55 waterlogging points across the city and ensured that no waterlogging persisted,” KP Anand, the corporation’s general manager (water works), told HT.

The Ghaziabad station recorded 13mm of rain between 8.30am and 5.30pm, according to IMD. The maximum and minimum temperatures were 31° and 24°, respectively. While humidity was around 92%.

Waterlogging was also seen on the National Highway-9 stretch near Wave City and also at Lal Kuan which caused traffic signals in the morning.

“There was no major waterlogging in areas of Indirapuram, as it did not rain heavily. The normal waterlogging drained within 15-20 minutes,” said Mohan Sangwan, a resident.
