Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the Ayushman Assam Scheme under the Mukhya Mantri Jan Arogya (MMJA) in Guwahati on Wednesday on the second anniversary of his government.
On May 10, chief minister Sarma-led government completed two years in office in the northeastern state.
Taking to Twitter, Sarma said that the scheme is a transformative healthcare system for the people of Assam. He added that while this is similar to the central government’s scheme, it is slightly different because the scheme will cover treatment expenditure for all kinds of diseases.

“Assam’s transformative healthcare is a shining example of a Double Engine Govt. Hon PM envisaged Ayushman Bharat to universalise healthcare. To expand its ambit, today I launched Ayushman Asom. 56 lakh families will get cashless insurance up to ₹5 lakhs under both schemes,” Sarma wrote on Twitter.
The CM said that the beneficiaries of the scheme will be listed under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). Those who have an Aadhaar Card and are not covered under Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), shall be eligible for the scheme, he said after the launch of the scheme.

“Under this scheme, beneficiaries will be able to get facilities in more than 300 empanelled hospitals in Assam and all the AB-PMJAY empanelled hospitals across the country. Approximately 2.6 million beneficiary families will be covered under the scheme,” Sarma said.
He said that the government has also launched an e-KYC drive under AB-PMJAY and AA-MMJAY for NFSA beneficiaries.
Further, the state government is planning to set up five additional Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) courts and also a dedicated judicial cadre of government-appointed public prosecutors and additional public prosecutors, said Sarma.
“The public prosecutors will be government employees, and we will give them salaries. They will be appointed through proper examination like other government departments. We want to increase the ratio of conviction because this defines the law and order situation of a state,” the Assam CM said.
