Doctors at B J Medical College (BJMC) and Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) successfully saved two infants by removing foreign objects lodged in their lungs, hospital officials said on Sunday.

A 10-month-old from Daund was admitted to a private hospital on December 23 with sudden breathing difficulty. A CT scan revealed a bead-like object in the left lung. Unable to provide specialised care, the hospital referred the infant to Sassoon.
Similarly, a nine-month-old from Loni, admitted to a private hospital on December 29 with an eight-day persistent cough, was referred to SGH after diagnosis was unclear. A CT scan showed a small peanut lodged in the left lung.
Both infants were immediately taken to the ENT operation theatre, where doctors performed endoscopic bronchoscopy using optical forceps. The surgeries, led by Prof Dr Rahul Telang and team, were challenging due to the patients’ age but were completed successfully with support from anaesthesiology, paediatrics departments, and nursing staff.
Officials said both infants are now stable and recovering, and are expected to be discharged in a few days. Doctors advised parents to be cautious about small objects and food items that may pose a choking risk to young children.
