AUS vs ENG Ball by Ball Commentary

8:17 AM IST Right then! That is all we have from this exciting Test match! The Ashes is reaching the final Test now. The fifth Test will take place at Hobart on 14th January. The first ball is set to be bowled at 8 am IST (2:30 am GMT) but make sure that you join us for the buildup before that. Take care and cheers!

8:10 AM IST No second guesses here! Usman Khawaja is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH! He says that it was a great fight from England and this is what makes Test cricket great. Adds that Smith was batting really well in the first innings and they wanted to get a partnership there and not thinking too far ahead. Khawaja says that he is enjoying the game despite the ups and downs that he has faced in his career and he loves playing red-ball cricket. Mentions that there is a lot of cricket coming up and hopefully they can carry their current momentum moving forward.

8:15 AM IST Pat Cummins, Australia's captain, says that it was a great game of Test cricket and they got really close. Adds that a bit less weather would have produced a result for sure. He adds that the forecast was hopeless and it said that Day 4 was going to rain so that played on his mind while making decisions. Says that it was good fun to captain today and lead his bowlers. About giving the ball to Steven Smith over Marnus Labuschagne, he says that Smith talked his way to get the ball in his hand.

8:27 AM IST Joe Root, the England skipper, says that it was important to draw this game. He adds that it has been a tough tour but he is happy that they have shown grit and determination this time. He mentions that they needed to show character and still have a long way to go as a team but says that he is pleased to see the fight shown by the guys here. He applauds Zak Crawley and says that he has the quality to succeed at the international level and has good technique. He adds that Jos Buttler will be going home as his injury is bad but it is part of playing Test cricket and applauds his fighting spirit.

8:10 AM IST The stage was set for Australia to take 10 wickets on the final day but England showed brilliant grit and patience to save the Test here. Looking back, Cummins' late declaration would be probably questioned. If they had given themselves a bit more time, then Australia would have probably won this game. But some things are just not meant to be.

8:32 AM IST Australia had a lead of 122 runs and they wanted to set a target for England which the visitors would not even attempt to chase. It was once again Usman Khawaja to lead them with the bat. He scored another ton to become the third batter after Doug Walters and Ricky Ponting to score twin tons at the SCG. Cameron Green also got a fifty and Australia had set a massive target of 388 for England.

8:25 AM IST The first innings for England was an interesting one. They were reeling at 36 for 4 and it looked like they would not be able to avoid the followon either. But a brilliant stand between Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes led the recovery. They both took their time but scored quickly once they had their eyes in. Ben Stokes got a fifty and Jonny Bairstow scored a brilliant ton to make sure that they avoid the followon. For Australia, it was a good performance by all their bowlers but it was Scott Boland with his 4 wickets who impressed the most.

8:25 AM IST The Test started under quite a bit of cloud cover and we had a frustrating Day 1. Players went on and off with almost half the day getting washed out. But still, it was a pretty good show by Australia. Led by a brilliant ton by Usman Khawaja in his comeback Test, the hosts declared at 416 for 8 towards the end of Day 2. Stuart Broad took a 5-wicket haul for England as the rest of the bowlers had a tough time.

8:23 AM IST Cummins had a decision to make. Who to bowl along with Lyon? Marnus Labuschagne or Steven Smith? Both are not frontline spinners but the former has been bowling quite a bit in the recent past. But the skipper decided to go with Steven Smith. He delivers so often with the bat but now he had the ball in his hand. The golden boy of Australian cricket got the wicket of Leach and Australia were just a wicket away from victory. James Anderson joined Stuart Broad in the middle. This pair has delivered with the ball for England on countless occasions but now they had the bat in their hand. It was all down to Anderson to face Steven Smith in the last over and the pacer delivered once more for his side. Not with the ball, but with the bat!

8:30 AM IST The second new ball was due and Pat Cummins even had Steven Smith bowl a few overs before it was taken. But it was the bowling of Nathan Lyon that provided them with the wicket of Ben Stokes. That opened up the lower order with the second new ball in hand. That proved to be a gamechanger as Pat Cummins got two wickets in the same over and then Jonny Bairstow's resistance ended too. With two wickets remaining, the Aussies smelled victory especially with the new ball in hand and their pacers breathing fire. But Jack Leach and Stuart Broad frustrated the bowlers and kept their hopes alive. The Aussies tried everything from bouncers, to yorkers, to length deliveries but couldn't break this stand. It got to a point where the umpires decided that pacers can't bowl due to bad light.

8:18 AM IST Plenty of fight was shown by England in this innings. First, it started with Zak Crawley playing his natural game and scoring a sublime fifty. The rest of the batters did go in a bit of shell but the fight was there. The stand between Ben Stokes and Joe Root was particularly good as they played more than 150 deliveries in the middle. It was expected that the wicket of Joe Root would trigger a collapse given that the three main batters after that were nursing injuries but England did not give up. Despite struggling with a side strain, Ben Stokes carried out really well and got to his fifty. His stand with Jonny Bairstow took England to the last session of the game and there must have been a few nerves in the Aussie camp then.

7:54 AM IST Phew! What a game that was! Probably the last time that James Anderson will play at the SCG and he delivered for his team. A nail-biter and England will take heart from the fact that they showed plenty of fight in this match. This is why we love Test cricket. The series might be done but both teams gave it their all till the very last ball to get the desired result!

The English batters have done well so far but they will face a big challenge when the second new ball will presumably be taken by Pat Cummins. These two batters haven't let their injuries hamper them so far and would want to see their team to safety. Pat Cummins would need to be innovative and lead from the front now. 35 overs and 6 wickets, one would feel that 2 more wickets and Australia will seal the game, but given the grit shown by the English batters in this game, one shouldn't count them out just yet. 2:39 AM IST As Covid-19 seems to be taking center stage again, there are some question marks arising on the scheduling of the India- West Indies series that is set to start on February 6. The six white-ball games are originally scheduled to take place at six different venues but there have been reports that the BCCI might conduct these games in just one or two venues. Nothing official as of now, just unconfirmed reports.

1:42 AM IST Post the wicket of Crawley, Stokes and Root have gone quiet. They are simply looking to block each and every delivery. There were a couple of big heaves by Stokes and one by Root each but other than that, they have been content with blocking and leaving. How long they continue to bat like this remains to be seen though. Another big issue would be the injuries of Bairstow and Buttler and how well they manage to bat here. A tough session awaits England but if they can manage to get through the next session without much damage, then the Aussies would be under a bit of extra pressure with bad light likely to play a role later on. 1:44 AM IST A nice session for the Aussies. They were a bit flat at the start but knew that it was only a matter of time before a wicket came. Hameed was dropped early but the tall Boland continued his dream run in Tests to get that wicket. Malan too did not last long and Australia had their second. But there was one batter who must have made the hosts a bit nervous and that was Crawley. Boy, the tall right-hander was looking in sublime touch. Punishing the bad deliveries and scoring at a nice pace. The question was who will get the wicket of Crawley? Green obliged when he served a brilliant yorker and ended Crawley's innings and that wicket put Australia right on top of the game.

Going in a shell and looking to block it out may not suit every batter. Warne says that Hameed would be happier to block every ball away as it suits his natural game but Crawley is someone who likes to score runs and he shouldn't look to go in a shell. Both of them agree that there is not a one-size-fits-all solution though.

Well, the middle path of punishing the bad balls and respecting the good ones is the most ideal one but it is easier said than one.

10:34 PM IST Well, the English team could take inspiration from how India played in Sydney in early 2021. Chasing a target of 407, the Indian team earned a well-deserved draw. Despite the injuries to Pujara, Pant, Vihari and Ashwin, these four batters batted with all they had to save the game. The stand between Ashwin and Vihari was particularly impressive as they were struggling big time with their injuries but made sure that the series stood 1-1 going into the final Test. It is quite unlikely that this English side would go for a win here but a draw is within the realms of expectation and would be a big morale booster for the visitors given how the series has gone.

10:23 PM IST The first session could well turn to be the deciding session of this Test match and whichever team manages to clinch it would get a big boost in their attempt to get the desired result at the end of this Test. It is time for England to show some character as a Test side. Can they salvage a draw here? Or will the rampant Australian team take a 4-0 lead in the series? We have mentioned that there are 98 overs to be bowled but rain is a big factor. It stayed away on Day 4 but the weather in Sydney has been quite unpredictable during this game. Well, let us hope that the weather gods stay away.

10:22 PM IST England have shown the fighting spirit they lacked throughout the series in this Test match. Their performance with the bat in the first innings will go a long way in building their confidence coming into the final day and with some astute batting they can salvage a draw here. The pitch is still decent to bat and if English batters bat to their potential we might see some happy English faces at the end of this Test match. But how they play the GOAT, Nathan Lyon, here would be a big, big factor on Day 5. England would also hope that the fitness of Bairstow and Buttler doesn't hurt them. Australia, on the other hand, will go all out to get those 10 wickets required and they have shown time and again in this series that they are more than capable to do so.

The series has been dominated by Australia so far and this is the day for England to redeem themselves. By that, I don't necessarily mean winning the game here. The equation is quite simple - Australia need 10 wickets to win this Test match and England need to bat out 98 overs to save this Test. They also need 358 runs to win this Test but even the most optimistic English supporters will not have that equation in their mind. England might also get some help from rain but let's hope that it’s cricket that will take the centre stage for the most part of the day.

7:04 AM IST All is not gloomy for England, though. They may not be in a position to win this game but certainly can make a statement with a solid batting display in the fourth innings. They will hope for some help from the weather but would ideally prefer to get the draw by grinding it out, than by luck. They have begun well, with Adam Gilchrist informing on air that this is the best opening stand for England in the series!
