Their plan would’ve been to get 400 runs on the board but credit to Bangladesh spinners who spun a web around the batters and restricted the Kiwis to 328 runs. Mehidy Hasan led the bowling attack for the visitors and he picked up 3 wickets. Mominul Haque took the final wicket to end things for the Kiwis. Henry Nicholls could not get much support from the other end, he fought a lone battle and if not for him New Zealand would've never crossed the 300-run mark.

The foundation was laid by Devon Conway and Will Young and with Henry Nicholls still on the crease, the Kiwis would look to pile as many runs as possible. In posting a hundred on Saturday, Conway became just the sixth man in history and the first since Michael Clarke in 2004 to score a century in his first Tests at both home and away. Australian duo Harry Graham and Kepler Wessels, Pakistan's Azhar Mahmood and England's Sir Andrew Strauss are the other men to achieve the rare feat.

6:52 AM IST Devon Conway is up for a chat. He says that it was very challenging to bat upfront and the wicket was green. Mentions that it got a lot better lately and is happy to contribute. Tells that Bangladesh bowled pretty well and it was all about being patient. Adds that they are disappointed that they lost Tom Blundell at the end but feels that they are still in a strong position. On his wicket, he says that it is the last way one wants to get out after all the hard work but that's how it goes.

5:37 AM IST Bangladesh started the first hour of the day really well but looked to have lost their track as the ball kept getting old and there was no movement off it. The pitch too got better and better to bat. Bangladesh bowlers toiled very hard and gained rewards with three wickets in the final session. That would certainly boost their confidence after ending the day on a positive note.

5:50 AM IST After losing Tom Latham early on and Will Young before Tea, Devon Conway and Ross Taylor batted really well and the runs kept coming at a brisk rate after the Tea break. Taylor was struggling to find the middle of the blade initially but got into his rhythm and struck some beautiful shots but unfortunately, he slipped out once he tried to up his ante. Later, Nicholls came in and made his intentions clear with his aggressive shots. But soon after, Conway was sent back as well and at the stroke of Stumps, they lost Tom Blundell as well. The Kiwis are still in a commonding position though and would look to pile as many runs as possible on Day 2.

5:45 AM IST What a great comeback by the visitors in the final session of the day. It was all about New Zealand in the first two sessions, but the hosts lost Devon Conway who was well set and then lost Tom Blundell at the stroke of Stumps. Bangladesh would be happy with their bowling performance and would hope to end things early on Day 2.

Yes, they did lose Will Young but before that, he and Devon Conway continued post Lunch to blunt the Bangladesh bowling attack. The duo kept motoring along and also brought up their individual fifties. The track eased out considerably and it looked like Bangladesh would have a wicketless session but credit to some good piece of fielding, they saw the back of Will Young. 12:04 AM IST Bangladesh seamers were on the money in the opening hour of the session and got an important wicket of Latham. Later, they were unable to cause much threat and leaked handful runs. The bowlers though kept their lines and lengths tight just to build some pressure on the hosts. Even though they were not rewarded, the visitors would look to continue on their good way. But Tom Latham will be with his entire frontline pace attack. Devon Conway is also set to return after an injury. This series will be special for another reason, as veteran batter Ross Taylor announced retirement from international cricket and this two Tests will be his final hurrah in the longest format.

To add salt to the injury, their record in New Zealand is something they wouldn't want to look at. Can they turn things this time around?
