Commentary

5:38 AM IST Well, it's a damp end to proceedings here at the SCG as the rain gods have ultimately had the final say, but the Big Bash juggernaut rolls on. We shift our attention immediately to the second leg of today’s double-header, where the Adelaide Strikers are poised to take on the Perth Scorchers at 8.15 am GMT (1.45 pm IST). The build-up, though, will begin much sooner, so do join us for what promises to be a cracking encounter. Until then, take care, and cheers!
5:36 AM IST Though it’s a washout, it's a good result for both sides! With the points shared, the Hobart Hurricanes have officially booked their spot in the playoffs! As for the Sydney Sixers, this crucial point lifts them into third place on the ladder, keeping them right in the hunt for the top four as the race heats up.
5:36 AM IST It’s all over here as the rain has forced the match to be ABANDONED. It is a disappointing finish for the frustrated crowd who waited a long time for play to resume. We only got to see five overs of action, where Babar Azam played a slow, steady knock while Steve Smith showed some brief style at the other end. Unfortunately, the weather has won today, and the teams will have to split the points.
5:03 AM IST UPDATE - 5.03 am GMT (10.33 am IST) - This is getting ridiculous! The drizzle just won't stop. The two umpires were seen in the middle with the umbrellas and to make matters worse, even the super soppers have stopped working. Just endless waiting!
4:43 AM IST Meanwhile, History is being made at the BCA Stadium in India as it hosts its first-ever international to kick off India's 2026 calendar! Shubman Gill takes the reins of a powerhouse Indian side that welcomes back Shreyas Iyer and features the legendary duo of Rohit and Virat, though they will be without the injured Rishabh Pant. Facing them is a Michael Bracewell-led New Zealand outfit, depleted of stars like Williamson but offering a big stage for debutant Kristian Clarke to make his mark. The atmosphere is electric, the pitch looks fresh, and the action gets underway at 11 AM GMT. Don't miss that cracking opener!
4:44 AM IST UPDATE - 4.22 am GMT (9.52 am IST) - The waiting game continues! It seems the Rain Gods are not in a good mood today. Sydney Sixers' opening batters didn't get the fiery start, but just when they were looking comfortable, the game got interrupted. Right now, two Super Soppers are soaking water logs at the boundary ropes. Stick around for further updates.
3:55 AM IST UPDATE - 3.49 am GMT (9.19 am IST) - Nothing much to update folks! The drizzles are steady and looking at the weather report, it appears that the rain will persist for a couple of hours. During the break, Sam Curran had a quick chat, sharing his experience in the International League T20 and stats that he feels proud to lead Desert Vipers. Also, he joking admit that he brought the English weather with him, but he hopes it dries out so that they can continue with the game. Ended up saying that he felt gutted that he didn't play the Big Bash League from the start.
3:30 AM IST Game stopped due to : Rain Stoppage
3:36 AM IST UPDATE - 3.30 am GMT (9.00 am IST) - Oh no! It's just what we feared. It started to drizzle and the players are walking back to their dugouts. The groundmen were quick to cover the main track. Stay tuned for more updates!

2:11 AM IST Hobart Hurricanes have been one of the standout sides this season and currently sit at the top of the points table with 12 points, showing great balance with bat and ball. 2:05 AM IST ... MATCHDAY ...
9:55 AM IST We are in the final stretch with just 10 games left in the league phase of the 2025/26 Big Bash League. Match number 31 pits the Sydney Sixers against the reigning champions, the Hobart Hurricanes, at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground. While the Hurricanes, with 6 wins from 8 games, have given a strong account of themselves, the Sixers, after a slow start to the season, have picked up momentum with three wins on the bounce to move firmly into the finals mix. The common theme across those three wins for Sydney has been their bowling unit restricting oppositions. Although the chases have not always been convincing, they have been good enough to take them over the line. With the Ashes now done, all 8 teams receive a significant boost as Australian Test stars join their respective BBL sides for the remainder of the season. For the Sixers, Steve Smith and off-spinner Todd Murphy will be available from this game, while Mitchell Starc is set to be available from January 16. Smith’s return adds much-needed stability to the Sixers’ batting unit at a time when Babar Azam, Moises Henriques and Josh Philippe have not quite been at their best. With Sam Curran also joining the squad from the last game, the Sixers are well served with both bat and ball. On the bowling front, Jack Edwards has stood out, while young left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder Joel Davies has made his presence felt with both bat and ball. The Hurricanes, on the other hand, have built momentum of their own and will be aiming to make it three wins on the bounce. They receive a boost with the availability of all-rounder Beau Webster. With Tim Ward and Mitchell Owen showing promise at the top, the Hurricanes are unlikely to tinker with their opening combination. Nikhil Chaudhary has stepped up impressively in the absence of Tim David, ensuring the middle order has not been overly hampered. In the bowling department, leg-spinner Rishad Hossain has starred, while Nathan Ellis has led the pace attack with distinction. While Riley Meredith, Chris Jordan, and Rehan Ahmed have gone for runs at times, they have still contributed effectively across phases. Last season, Hobart won both meetings. Can the Hurricanes continue that dominance, or will the Sixers turn the tables this time around? We shall find out.
