8:00 AM IST All in readiness now. The teams and the umpires make their way out to the ground. Ben Duckett and Tom Banton will open the batting for England. It will be Asitha Fernando with the new ball for Sri Lanka. We are moments away from the live action.
7:46 AM IST Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Kamindu Mendis, Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis (C/WK), Pavan Rathnayake, Sahan Arachchige, Janith Liyanage, Dasun Shanaka, Dunith Wellalage (in place of Sachindu Colombage), Eshan Malinga, Asitha Fernando, Dilshan Madushanka.
7:48 AM IST England (Playing XI) - Ben Duckett, Tom Banton, Joe Root, Harry Brook (C), Jordan Cox (WK), Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Liam Dawson (in for Adil Rashid), Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue (in place of Sonny Baker).
7:41 AM IST TOSS - Sri Lanka have won the toss and opted to BOWL.
7:22 AM IST Teams eye their valuable points - Sri Lanka have struggled against England in recent encounters and will be keen to turn the tide, while England will draw confidence from their recent series win over the Lankans. With both sides desperate to register their first win of the tri-series, an intriguing contest awaits. Who are you backing to come out on top? The toss and team news will follow shortly. Stay tuned.
7:22 AM IST Sri Lanka seek support from their batters - Sri Lanka, meanwhile, suffered a 37-run defeat against Pakistan in the tournament opener. Bowling first, they conceded 305 runs, although Asitha Fernando, Eshan Malinga, and Dilshan Madushanka had their moments with the ball. Kamindu Mendis provided a bright start in the chase, but Sri Lanka soon slipped to 91/4. Pavan Rathnayake (79) and Janith Liyanage (60) then fought back with valuable half-centuries, only for the lack of support from the lower order to prove costly as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 268.
7:23 AM IST England look to bounce back  - England showed promise in patches during their opening game against Pakistan but allowed the hosts to recover and post 302 after reducing them to 133/5. Atkinson, Baker, Jacks, and Overton impressed with the ball, while Banton, Duckett, and Root provided a decent start in the chase. England were well placed at 165/3 before a dramatic collapse saw them bowled out for just 215 inside 40 overs, suffering an 87-run defeat. They will need to regroup quickly and deliver a more complete performance to get their campaign back on track.
7:23 AM IST Both teams look for their first win  - Hello and welcome to our coverage of the ODI Tri-Series in Pakistan, 2026, featuring Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and England. In the third match of the tournament, England take on Sri Lanka at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Both teams are coming off defeats against Pakistan and will be eager to get their first points on the board.
7:10 AM IST …MATCHDAY…
2:07 PM IST Game 3 - The World Cup is bearing down, and every side is busy hunting for the right balance. Pakistan’s ODI tri-series has reached its halfway mark, with Sri Lanka taking on England in Rawalpindi in the last game of this leg before the action moves to Lahore. Both come in nursing the same bruise, a heavy defeat to the hosts after falling short in chases of slightly over 300, so there is plenty to put right. The double round-robin format means each team plays the other twice, which means a loss here can be avenged soon after. World Cup preps begin on a slippery note - A year out from the World Cup in South Africa, England are building a squad. That means finding the players who can deliver under pressure and moving on from those who cannot. Three straight ODI series wins have raised the bar, and falling short of 302 is nothing to be ashamed of. What will bother them is how they had the start they needed and then let it slip through brittle batting, which leaves plenty to think about. From 91/0, they were bowled out for 215, and not one middle order batter got past the thirties. The top order did not help either. Banton struck a wonderful hundred in the final ODI of the summer and looked in superb touch again in Rawalpindi, but he threw his head back knowing he had tossed away a chance to cement his place further. With Jos Buttler missing the tour of Pakistan and Australia next month, this was a golden chance for Jordan Cox. Instead, he put down two catches and could not turn a start with the bat into something substantial. Root looked good for his 33, a man who already has a hundred and a fifty in ODIs on Pakistan soil, and Sam Curran’s 27 had some polish too. Brook was a different story, left all at sea by a beauty of a turning delivery from Arafat. The common thread was starts squandered by several batters, and their glaring vulnerabilities against spin, losing six wickets to Arafat Minhas alone. England will want to fix that before their next assignment. Searching for the right mix - Without Jofra Archer, England’s attack did a decent job of squeezing the opposition for long stretches, then gave it all back by leaking runs at an alarming rate in the last ten overs or so. The unit does look a touch less menacing, though the squad still holds dangerous weapons in Gus Atkinson, Sam Curran and Jamie Overton. Young Sonny Baker was expensive in his first spell but fought back to finish with a three-for and could well retain his spot for now. However, Josh Tongue, who sat out against Pakistan, is expected to return to the XI and add more lethalness to the pace unit. In the spin department, Adil Rashid remains the primary weapon, with Will Jacks in the supporting role. Liam Dawson, vastly experienced, is waiting in the wings and could prove a million-dollar option in the subcontinental conditions. Banking on their sharpest weapons - Sri Lanka’s best chance in this contest sits where their strength meets England’s weakness. England lost most of their wickets to spin against Pakistan, and slow bowling is the most dangerous part of this Sri Lankan attack. Wellalage’s control, Colombage’s unorthodox leg-spin and Theekshana’s variations give them plenty of ways to squeeze England through the middle overs, more than Pakistan had. The catch is that Theekshana and Wellalage both sat out the last game, so the real question is who makes way and who gets the nod. The pace unit, though, did the damage last time. Eshan Malinga was the standout with a four-for, with Madushanka and Asitha Fernando also doing their bit, and that trio may carry the early load again before the spinners take over. Three questions before the Lankan batters - The first is who gets the innings off the ground. With Nissanka out and Asalanka dropped, the top of the order is the least settled part of the side. Avishka Fernando is back after a break and was gone early against Pakistan, and Lahiru Udara has never played an ODI. England’s pacers, who include Atkinson, Overton, Baker and Tongue, will aim at the start. Pakistan’s trio of Shaheen, Naseem and Faheem took the first four wickets before the 20th over, and Sri Lanka had barely recovered when the middle order took over. The second is whether Kusal Mendis can change gears. He is the best batter in the side and has a strong record against England, with 624 runs in 16 matches at 41.6 and a hundred at Headingley. Against Pakistan, though, he spent 34 balls on 18, and in a chase of 300 plus that kind of start leaves the rest scrambling. His value is in building a platform, but he has to turn it into pace by the 25th over, because the side loses its way when its anchor stays in anchor mode. The third is who finishes. Kamindu Mendis opened in the last game and is the most fluent stroke-maker, with a 44 against Pakistan and a 54 at Headingley. Rathnayake (79 off 74, then 48 off 39 at Headingley) and Liyanage (60 off 74) have shown they can build and hit. Shanaka is the experienced finisher, who holds the ability of turning matches on its head. The problem against Pakistan was that once Rathnayake and Liyanage fell, the last five wickets went for 15, so the finishing job is only half done. Team form (Last 5 completed ODIs, recent first) - SL - LLWLW | ENG - LWLWW. Which Lion will roar louder? England hold the edge in this rivalry, though not by much. They lead the ODI head-to-head 42-39, and the recent trend favours them, with a series win at home last month. That series had a scare in it, though. At Headingley, Sri Lanka defended 321 as England fell 16 runs short. At Rawalpindi, both teams have a bit of an underwhelming record in the ODIs. England have won just one out of five matches, with that win coming way back in 2005. At the same time, Sri Lanka have tasted a win in just two out of seven at this venue, having not won here since 2004, which was also in a tri-series back then. Let's see who comes out on top.
