29.5

Asitha Fernando to Shubman Gill, no run

ballImg132.6kph

A big appeal for LBW, but turned down. Might be too high or even sliding down leg, and there might have even been an inside edge. No review is taken.

29.4

Asitha Fernando to Shubman Gill, no run

Good-length delivery, around the top of off and middle. Gill gets forward and nudges it to the leg side. Padikkal inquires about the single but Gill turns it down.

29.3

Asitha Fernando to Shubman Gill, 4 runs

ballImg134.4kph

FOUR! Uh, oh! A teaser for the fielder in the deep and he'll be disappointed to have not stopped that, especially after putting in the hard yards. Full again, straighter in line, Gill clips it sweetly and through mid-wicket. The deep square leg fielder runs the length of the ropes to his left and slides in but fails to palm the ball back in.

Keshara Nuwantha to Shubman Gill, no run

ballImg86.3kph

At 86.3 kph, full and turning in very sharply from outside off. Shubman Gill is drawn forward to block but plays the wrong line and is hit on the front pad. The ball perhaps grazes the inside edge on its way as well. There's a very lengthy appeal for LBW from the men around and behind the bat, but not given. UltraEdge confirms a spike when the ball is next to the bat.

7:11 AM IST Welcome back for the post-Lunch session, folks. Usually, this is the best time for batting. And with the sun beating down, India will hope to build a steady partnership from here. Devdutt Padikkal and Shubman Gill walk to the crease to resume their alliance which is worth 22 runs now. The Lankans spread out to take their fielding spots with Dhananjaya de Silva having a candid chat with Ahsan Raza, the on-field umpire. Prabath Jayasuriya has been given the ball and will get us underway. Here we go...
7:09 AM IST ... DAY 1, SESSION 2 ...
6:48 AM IST Sri Lanka find their rhythm - Sri Lanka will be pleased with their bowling effort, with Lahiru Kumara and Asitha Fernando far more consistent than in the first Test, regularly testing the batters and producing some fine deliveries. Fittingly, both picked up a wicket, though dropped chances off Padikkal at 0 and 1 left them wanting more. Prabath Jayasuriya and Keshara Nuwantha chipped in nicely too, but the pitch has offered little to the spinners so far. Sri Lanka will look to keep chipping away, while India will aim to build partnerships. The second session is scheduled for 7.10 am GMT (12.40 pm IST), though it could start a few minutes late after Lunch.
6:46 AM IST A promising start for India - India started cautiously, with the openers leaving well and playing close to the body. Yashasvi Jaiswal, though, was keen to keep the runs flowing, while KL Rahul was content to bide his time. Just as Rahul began to open up, he chased one outside off and edged it through to the keeper, ending a promising stay. Devdutt Padikkal joined Jaiswal and had a couple of nervy moments, but Jaiswal continued to attack and raced to a fluent 45 before falling short of a deserved fifty and almost got into an altercation with Asitha Fernando while walking off too. Shubman Gill and Padikkal then held firm to take India safely through to the end of the session.
6:44 AM IST 6.32 am GMT (12.02 pm GMT) - LUNCH, DAY 1! A gripping opening session has left this 2nd Test finely poised, with India scoring briskly at just over three and a half an over, but Sri Lanka striking twice to remove both openers. The hosts could have made further inroads had they held on to their chances, but India have kept the scoreboard ticking. With the game hanging in the balance, the post-Lunch session could be pivotal, with the momentum up for grabs.

OUT! CHOPPED ON! Fernando replies with a peach of a delivery and gives a bit of send-off to Jaiswal who hurls a few words at the bowler as he trudges off. Asitha bowls from around the stumps. Fuller than a length, around off. It lands and nips back in very sharply and also stays a tad low on the bounce. Yashasvi Jaiswal is caught on the crease, tries to punch it through the covers, but gets a thick inside edge that crashes into the stumps behind him. FOUR! Excellent effort from the debutant, Mishara, but goes in vain. 50 UP FOR INDIA! Slightly short and on off, Yashasvi Jaiswal has ample time to go back and he whips it across towards deep mid-wicket. Kamil Mishara covers a lot of ground, almost running a mile to his right from deep square leg and throws himself to dive and tries to flick the ball back in. He gets a hand to it, but it squirms free and trickles on, and though he scrambles for a second attempt, it just creeps over the rope for four.

5:18 AM IST Done and dusted inside two days - After swallowing a stinging defeat in Darwin, Australia responded with pure ruthlessness, flattening Bangladesh by an innings and 51 runs in Mackay, hosting its maiden Test. The hosts skittled the tourists for a paltry 64 in the first innings, banking a decent lead, though their own batting frailties resurfaced once again in reply. But with the ball, they were every bit as merciless second time around too, bowling Bangladesh out for 95. Mitchell Starc was the architect of the carnage, walking away with a ten-wicket match haul and single-handedly taking apart Bangladesh's batting unit. With that win, Australia have not only spared themselves the ignominy of a series whitewash, but have also kept their grip on top spot in the WTC 2025-27 cycle intact, for now at least.

Says that he does not mind bowling first, though, pointing to the cloud cover as a factor that could help his side strike early and apply pressure from the outset. On the changes in their XI, he confirms two, with Kamil Mishara set to make his debut and Pasindu Sooriyabandara also coming into the side. On being asked what Sri Lanka need to do better in this match, he keeps it simple - striking early with the ball, and with the bat, protecting wickets while ensuring the scoreboard keeps ticking over.
4:12 AM IST The captain of India - Shubman Gill mentions that his side will bat first on a hard surface that he expects to slow down as the match progresses, eventually aiding the bowlers on Day 4 and 5. Gill informs that debutant Saransh replaces Kuldeep Yadav, who unfortunately misses out due to an infection. On the previous game, Gill says that he would give his side a good 9 as they had a decent game throughout that Test. He reckons that achieving a perfect game is very difficult in Test cricket, noting that fluctuations and ups and downs are inevitable over the course of a five-day match.
4:14 AM IST Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Lahiru Udara, Kamil Mishara (On Test debut), Pasindu Sooriyabandara, Kamindu Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva (C), Sonal Dinusha, Niroshan Dickwella (WK), Keshara Nuwantha, Prabath Jayasuriya, Lahiru Kumara and Asitha Fernando. IN - Kamil Mishara, Pasindu Sooriyabandara. OUT - Nishan Madushka, Dinesh Chandimal.
4:14 AM IST India (Playing XI) - Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel, Ravindra Jadeja, Saransh Jain (On Test debut), Manav Suthar, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna. IN - Saransh Jain. OUT - Kuldeep Yadav.
4:01 AM IST TOSS - It's time for the coin flip in Colombo. Both captains - Dhananjaya de Silva and Shubman Gill - are out there donning their blazers. Russel Arnold leads the proceedings. The coin is flipped by DDS. Gill calls Heads and he calls it correctly. INDIA HAVE ELECTED TO BAT FIRST.
4:16 AM IST PITCH REPORT - Sanjay Manjrekar is pitchside with his assessment. Sanjay Manjrekar expects a run-fest at the SSC. Scanning the strip this morning, he notes the same curator from Galle appears to have followed the same script, blanketing the entire pitch in grass. He adds that the only wrinkle this time is a touch more life in that covering, not quite a green top, but noticeably less dried out than what was on show last Test. The grass, he details, is there purely to bind the soil, not to signal a seamer's paradise. Even so, he explains, that hint of live grass means whoever wins the toss will almost certainly bat first, though the new ball bowlers might nick a little assistance in that opening hour, the old cliché holding true once again. What makes this surface genuinely fascinating, he adds, is the record book, with teams batting first having won 16 times here, and teams batting second have won 16 times too. Says it is a pitch where the toss barely tilts the scales, a rare thing he calls by wrapping it up.
4:30 AM IST Another beginning - Sri Lanka’s 25-year-old Kamil Mishara is also set to make his Test debut. Having already represented Sri Lanka in ODIs and T20Is, Mishara now begins a new chapter in his international career with his first Test appearance, becoming the 174th player to represent Sri Lanka in the longest format.
3:54 AM IST Test Cap 320 - The Indian team is in a huddle, with head coach Gautam Gambhir also present. SARANSH JAIN IS ALL SET TO MAKE HIS TEST DEBUT. Ravindra Jadeja hands him the cap as the others applaud it warmly. This is highly likely to mean Saransh will come into the playing XI in place of Kuldeep Yadav, who has not been seen taking part in the warm-up drills. A huge moment for the Madhya Pradesh all-rounder, who has earned his opportunity after years of hard work in domestic cricket.
3:52 AM IST A decent batting surface? Reckons Harsha Bhogle on air when he was asked about how the surface would play out. He says it is one of the best batting tracks in Sri Lanka. But also adds that there was some overnight rain and the pitch was under covers this morning so he mentions that there might be some moisture out there. However, he is quick to add that with the sun beating down right now, conditions will dry up considerably.
3:40 AM IST Aiming for ruthless perfection - India arrive in Colombo in high spirits, but there are vital areas they will look to fine-tune. Yashasvi Jaiswal and captain Shubman Gill will be keen to show greater shot discipline against probing lines and lengths after missing out in Galle. The batting unit has plenty of depth with the in-form Devdutt Padikkal, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant firing. On the bowling front, young spinner Manav Suthar is flying high after his sensational 10-wicket match haul. India could also hand a Test debut to off-spinner Saransh Jain, replacing Kuldeep Yadav, who wasn't used much in the first Test, or wasn't effective enough to target Sri Lanka's left-hander-heavy lineup alongside Ravindra Jadeja and pacer Mohammed Siraj.
3:37 AM IST Lankan overhaul and tactical reboot - Sri Lanka enter this must-win clash with notable changes after paying heavily for top-order collapses in Galle. With veteran Dinesh Chandimal ruled out due to concussion and Nishan Madushka dropped, debutant Kamil Mishara will probably step up to open the innings. The home team will rely on Mishara to counter India's left-arm spin threat, while young Pasindu Sooriyabandara gets another opportunity to prove his mettle. To challenge the visitors, the Lankan batters must replicate the grit displayed by Sonal Dinusha and Niroshan Dickwella, while Prabath Jayasuriya and Asitha Fernando will need to strike regularly and early in their spells with the ball.
3:33 AM IST The Colombo assignment - A very warm welcome to one and all! The Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo, aka SSC, is set for the decisive second and final Test of this 2-Test series between Sri Lanka and India. The visitors hold a 1-0 series lead following an emphatic 165-run victory in Galle. Shubman Gill is on the cusp of sealing his first away Test series win as skipper, while Dhananjaya de Silva and his Lankan lions will be desperate to bounce back, protect their home turf, and level the series.
3:30 AM IST ... MATCH DAY ...
8:56 AM IST All to play for in Colombo - India and Sri Lanka head to the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo for the second and final Test of the series, with the visitors holding a 1-0 lead after their convincing 165-run victory in Galle. India have already taken a significant step forward in their WTC campaign, while Sri Lanka now face a must-win contest if they are to level the series and keep their own hopes alive. With the series on the line, the pressure is firmly on the hosts to respond. India have momentum on their side - India could hardly have asked for a better start to the series. Their batting showed plenty of depth in Galle, while the bowling attack found a match-winner in Manav Suthar, who claimed 10 wickets on only his second Test appearance. Devdutt Padikkal was equally influential, producing a magnificent century in the first innings, earning Player of the Match honours and strengthening his case for the No. 3 position. The result also gives Shubman Gill's side a chance to finish the series strongly and build further momentum in a WTC campaign where every result carries weight. India will not want to ease off after such a dominant opening performance, particularly with several players still establishing themselves in a relatively new-look Test setup. Padikkal makes selection a happy headache - One of India's most interesting questions heading into this Test is what they do at No. 3. Padikkal was brought in after Sai Sudharsan was ruled out, and his 167 has made it extremely difficult to look beyond him. He handled Sri Lanka's spin with confidence in Galle and followed his century with another useful 44, giving the management a strong reason to retain the same combination. There were other encouraging signs too, with KL Rahul contributing 82 after retiring hurt earlier in the innings and Dhruv Jurel adding a valuable fifty. With Yashasvi Jaiswal, Gill, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja also part of a deep batting group, India have plenty of ways to build pressure in Colombo. Sri Lanka's problems have deepened - For Sri Lanka, the challenge is now even greater than simply finding a way to beat India. They have been hit by a series of selection setbacks, with Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal ruled out for the second Test, while Pathum Nissanka remains unavailable. Chandimal's concussion in Galle means he must serve the mandatory seven-day rest period, leaving the hosts without another important piece of experience. Sri Lanka have responded by adding Kamil Mishara and Sahan Arachchige to the squad, giving them fresh options as they try to reshape a batting order that struggled to consistently match India's output in Galle. The responsibility will therefore fall even more heavily on Dhananjaya de Silva, Kamindu Mendis and the rest of the experienced core to guide a side that suddenly has several new pieces to fit together. Batting fightback offers hope - Sri Lanka may have come up short in Galle, but there were encouraging signs in the batting, particularly from Sonal Dinusha and Niroshan Dickwella. Dinusha produced a superb 100 in the first innings, while Dickwella added a valuable 80, with the pair sharing a crucial 146-run sixth-wicket stand after Sri Lanka had slipped to 90/5. Dinusha then followed it up with another composed 84 in the second innings, showing that there is enough resilience in the batting group to trouble India if the top and middle order can provide greater support. Can the Colombo surface change the equation? The move from Galle to the SSC brings a different challenge. The surface is expected to be more balanced rather than an outright spin-friendly track, with the possibility of giving the batters a good platform while still bringing the slower bowlers into the game as the Test progresses. That could make shot selection and patience particularly important for both sides. Sri Lanka will still hope their spinners can exploit any assistance available. Prabath Jayasuriya showed his class in Galle with 7/152, while India's own spin resources remain a major threat after Suthar's match-winning performance. Debutant Keshara Nuwantha also impressed with his right-arm off-breaks, picking up four wickets and repeatedly producing ripping deliveries that showed little sign of a player new to the international stage. Asitha Fernando and Lahiru Kumara then found their rhythm in the second innings and made a bigger impact than India's pacers. The battle between the two attacks could therefore once again have a major say, even if Colombo offers a different kind of challenge. More runs urgently needed - The biggest lesson from Galle for the hosts was the gap between the two batting units. India posted 462 in their first innings and eventually secured a 178-run lead before Sri Lanka were bowled out for 284. They then struggled to chase 372, being dismissed for 206. The absence of three established batters makes that challenge even tougher, but Sri Lanka cannot afford to simply look for replacements. They need their remaining experienced players to take responsibility and give the newer members of the batting order the platform to settle. If they can turn starts into substantial scores, the contest could look very different. A look at recent history - India's recent dominance over Sri Lanka adds another layer to the challenge for the hosts. The Islanders have not beaten India in a Test series since 2008, and India have now won the opening Test of this series to extend that advantage further. But Sri Lanka will know that history offers little protection once the first ball is bowled, particularly on home soil and with their entire series now resting on this one game. WTC stakes remain high - The bigger picture remains the World Test Championship. India entered the series fifth and Sri Lanka sixth, with both sides needing a strong run of results to stay in touch with the leading contenders. India's victory in Galle has strengthened their position, while Sri Lanka now have no room for another defeat. A win for Sri Lanka would not only square the series but also give their WTC campaign a much-needed boost. For India, another victory would deliver a 2-0 sweep and another valuable result as they attempt to climb the table. Team form (Last 5 Test matches, recent first) - SL - LDLWD | IND - WWLLW. What to expect? India have the momentum, the confidence and a 1-0 advantage, but Sri Lanka have the urgency of a side with everything to fight for. The hosts will have to overcome a depleted batting group and a confident Indian attack, while India will be looking to carry the authority they showed in Galle into another strong all-round performance. With a series win within reach for one side and survival at stake for the other, Colombo promises to provide a very different but equally important chapter.
