WI vs ENG Ball by Ball Commentary

10:04 PM IST Right then! That is all we have from the fifth and final day of the first Test match between West Indies and England and the match has ended in a DRAW, leaving the three-match series wide open. The second Test match will be played in Barbados from the 16th of March. That match will begin at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT) but as usual, the build up will begin much sooner. Do join us then. 9:53 PM IST Kraigg Brathwaite, the captain of West Indies says that it was a hard-fought draw and adds that the effort has been good from the team. He mentions that they were good with the new ball and they need to do better when the ball gets old and put pressure on the opposition team throughout the innings. He applauds Nkrumah Bonner for his effort and says that he is a special player. He mentions that there will be more for the pacers in Barbados. He says that there are some areas they can improve especially in the middle overs and they need to tighten up in that aspect.

9:52 PM IST England skipper, Joe Root says that he is really proud of the team and the character they showed after being put on the back foot right in the first hour itself. He then goes on to hail the performances of Jonny Bairstow and Jack Leach and also mentions Crawley's effort on the last day. On being asked about losing Wood, he says that yes with the ball reversing a bit he would have been useful but no one can stop an in-game injury. Also adds that Crawley is now one of the senior batters in the side and after last year, it has been brilliant from him to pick himself up and put on the performance. Ends by saying that they are looking forward to Barbados now.

9:49 PM IST Nkrumah Bonner is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH! He says that he likes to bat on this venue. He says that they wanted to win the game but are happy with the draw. He mentions that as a Test batter he needs to bat long and he did exactly that. He mentions that they showed a lot of character in this Test and says that they have a lot of positives from this game.

9:48 PM IST Presentation time...

9:49 PM IST West Indies bowlers were treated to a barrage of strokes from the English batters early in the day but did well to keep picking up wickets at regular intervals. The visitors did set the Windies a target but the home side never looked likely to force the issue and have a go at winning the match. It was a sensible move though and after a decent start from skipper Kraigg Brathwaite, John Campbell and Jermaine Blackwood played a couple of really bad shots to put their team in trouble. It was then a familiar partnership between Nkrumah Bonner and Jason Holder and just like the first innings, the pair just stood firm and frustrated the opposition bowlers. Bonner especially just gave nothing away and played almost 500 balls in the whole Test match. The Windies will be happy with a draw here but things could have been different and they could have probably taken a couple of risks in the match.

9:40 PM IST England pressed the issue hard on the final day but it was always going to be a daunting task to pick up 10 wickets on a surface that had barely anything in it for the bowlers in a bit over two sessions. Root was aggressive and did take a risk when he declared just before Lunch. The English bowlers found it difficult to get the opening breakthrough but once they got Brathwaite, they had an opening and one wicket became two in a flash. It was slow going then but on the stroke of Tea, Jack Leach got his second wicket of the innings. The visitors came out for the final session believing and a wicket early in the final session made things interesting. They probed and probed with Ben Stokes bending his back to the fullest as well but couldn't pick up any more wickets, succumbing to the dead pitch. Joe Root will be a bit disappointed here as one could see the look of desperation on his face to win this Test match.

9:38 PM IST Finally, the two sides decide to call it a day! Joe Root goes up to the Windies batters and shakes hands and the match has turned out to be as we expected. A match that had everything, a few stellar batting performances, a bit of rain delay, a docile pitch and an exciting final day, well barring the last session. But it was the pitch that won and neither side could force the issue enough to get a result in their favour.

England bowlers have done everything they could but could not break this partnership. England would like to believe that they are just a wicket away from triggering a collapse here but Windies will be pretty confident of salvaging a draw from hereon. We are also in that territory now where if both skippers agree, they can shake hands and the match can be declared as draw before finishing the scheduled overs remaining in the day.

After that though the pair of Jason Holder and Nkrumah Bonner have shown great resilience just like they did in the first innings. There are still 26 overs left in the day in which the visitors need 6 wickets to get the win but for the hosts, it's all about getting through the next 10 overs without losing a wicket. If they do so, they should be safe.

6:50 PM IST Windies were going well for the most part of the session but they lost three wickets in the later half of the session and that will be disappointing for the Caribbean boys. The skipper, Braithwaite and Campbell put together a solid opening stand and despite both of them departing in quick succession, the Windies have a lot of batting in their belly to salvage a draw here. The pitch no doubt is not helping the bowlers as much as a Day 5 pitch should but neither is it easy for the batters to score quickly. So, a Windies win is out of the equation and they would just look to bat the final session of this session with resilience and authority to take the confidence into the next game. However, this game has a knack of dishing out surprises every now and then, and let’s see what is in store for us in the final session of this Test match. 6:46 PM IST So, a wicket for England just at the stroke of Tea and that has ensured that the doors are still open for England. However, still 7 wickets to go and it is still quite a daunting task on this slow and low pitch. Unless, of course, West Indies decide to shoot on their own feet and self implode here. It was a hard toil for English bowlers with the x-factor of Mark Wood missing but they kept putting in efforts and eventually the man for the crisis, Ben Stokes broke the opening stand. Leach was the pick of the bowlers and managed to take two wickets to keep his team in the game but England needed at least one more wicket in this afternoon session to take more optimism and hope with them coming into the Tea break.

6:40 PM IST OUT! TAKEN! You could hear Zak Crawley saying 'that's a nice shot' on the previous delivery and now he takes a really sharp catch to make this match even more interesting. 4:23 PM IST Windies bowlers were put under pressure right from the start in the morning session but they reacted quite well and bowled some clever lines and lengths to restrict the scoring rate. They managed to take five wickets in this session and they will be overall pleased with their effort this morning. However, the real task is yet to be completed and their batters need to step up in the post-Lunch session. The pitch is still good to bat on and they will fancy playing out two sessions on this final day but a victory cannot be ruled out and it remains to be seen how they approach the afternoon session. The post-Lunch session starts at 10.10 pm IST (4.40 pm GMT). Stay tuned.

4:27 PM IST What an engrossing session of Test cricket this has been! England came out with great intent and stepped on the gas putting the Windies bowlers under pressure with a brisk scoring rate. They lost wickets on the way though but that did not derail their spirit and they kept going for their shots. Zak Crawley was the first man to depart but Dan Lawrence came in and started going from ball one and that provided impetus to the innings and that allowed skipper, Root to declare earlier than most people aniticipated. The reset button that was hit before this game for the English Test cricket has surely made them a bolder and more enterprising unit. It is upto their bowlers now to produce a special effort and script a famous victory here.

England have 67 overs to bowl out West Indies and register a win here while the men from the Caribbean need 282 runs more to script a famous victory here. All three results are possible here and if the action continues to be as edgy as it has been in the first session we are in for a treat on this final day of the first Test match.
