Mark Wood struck thrice to dismiss Usman Khawaja (18), Steve Smith (17) and Travis Head (1) as England maintained total control. Meanwhile, Marnus Labuschagne (44*) and Mitchell Marsh (1*) remained unbeaten and will resume batting on Day 4. Earlier, in response to Australia's first innings score of 317, England reached 592 in the post-Lunch session on Day 3, at Old Trafford in Manchester on Friday. Jonny Bairstow missed out on a ton, smacking an unbeaten knock of 99 runs off 81 balls, as England took a lead of 275 runs.
