Before the start of the World Cup, two teams were a common pick among every single predictions made by veteran cricketers and experts. But the two eventually incurred contrasting paths. India, who were touted to emulate their 2011 feat as mere hosts again and based on their run-up to the World Cup, has already emerged as almost a certainty for the knockouts. On the other hand, England, who were believed to defend their title on the back of the white-ball revolution the team witnessed, stand on the verge of being knocked out.

The 2019 champions, who lost three of their opening four matches, sit at the bottom half of the table. England were defeated by New Zealand in the tournament opener in what was an avengful victory for Blackcaps in repeat of the 2019 final. England recovered to beat Bangladesh in their second game, but were left stunned by Afghanistan with a 69-run defeat before South Africa added to their embarrassment with a record 229-run loss, the biggest ever the team incurred in ODI cricket. The loss subsequently left England's campaign hanging in balance, but they still have time to change their fortune.

How can England still qualify for World Cup 2023 semifinals?

England would also want to keep net run rate in mind in securing their victories in the remaining matches as it tends to play an influential role in the final stages of the league phase. England's present NRR of -1.247 is only better than Bangladesh (-1.253) and Netherlands (-1.902), both of whom have same points as Jos Buttler's men, albeit from five matches each.

What is England's remaining schedule in World Cup 2023?

England will take on former champions Sri Lanka in Bengaluru on October 26. The 1996 champions have incurred a similar fate in this edition of the World Cup, but stand ahead of England on the points table by virtue of a better NRR (-1.048). The team's toughest test however is on Sunday against table-toppers India in Lucknow and on November 4 against Australia in Ahmedabad. They will also play Netherlands on November 8 in Pune before taking on 1992 champions Pakistan in their final game in Kolkata on November 11.

What are England's chances of turning their World Cup 2023 campaign around?

The last time England had incurred a group-stage exit was in 2015 when they had finished fifth after being shocked by Bangladesh following which they were left soul searching and eventually emerged from the ashes of humiliation to clinch the trophy in 2019.

In the three previous times, where India were at least one of the hosts for the World Cup, England made it through past the league/group stage on all occasions. They finished as semifinalists in 1987, and as quarterfinalists in 1996 and 2011.
