Captain Ayush Mhatre scored a richly-deserving century, while Vihaan Malhotra got to his fifty quickly too. However, England had the last laugh, dismissing both set batters shortly after to breathe a huge sigh of relief. Two turned into three as Chavda fell for 11 too, out caught in the slips.
Earlier, India played out an attritional-yet-rewarding session. Ayush Mhatre and Vihaan Malhotra's partnership went strong and lasted a mammoth 173 runs, taking India to 126/1 at Lunch on Day 1. Well played, skip! The players stood up for Mhatre, who scored a rock-solid half-century for the India Under-19 team. India brought up their 100 inside 22 overs, after meandering at 33/1 after 12 overs. Brilliant step up.
Malhotra and Mhatre batted brilliantly, with their partnership continuing to build. They had it tough initially, but as the duo spent more time, both batters grew in confidence. The Indian batters were finding the red-ball conditions challenging, with England keeping them quiet. Barring a couple of boundaries, not many run-scoring opportunities for the Boys in Blue after Vaibhav Suryavanshi was dismissed early.
Suryavanshi did Suryavanshi things. In the first over itself, the 14-year-old seems to have continued from where he left off. Three fours in the first over as India are up and away. However, his blitz did not last too long as the youngster got out caught in the deep. Short ball outside off, Suryavanshi gave it his all, and while the impact was good, the ball did not carry the distance.
Expect some more fireworks from the blade of Suryavanshi as India captain Ayush Mhatre won the toss and opted to bat against England.
Youngsters from India and England will be put through the rigours of Test cricket for the first time when the two Under-19 teams face each other in the first Youth Test starting today at Beckenham. After a successful Youth ODI series, which the Indian team won 4-1, the Indian Colts, featuring Vaibhav Suryavanshi, captain Ayush Mhatre, and many more promising talents, will be eyeing an encore against their English counterparts.
It wasn’t too long ago that the Youth ODIs were played across three different venues. As India took the series comfortably, one man, Suryavanshi, grabbed the most eyeballs. His knocks of 48, 45, 86, 143 and 33 only enhanced his rising stock. To think that a 14-year-old outdid his seniors speaks volumes about what this teenager is made of and has in store. Surprisingly, the bat of Ayush Mhatre remained quiet while the likes of Malhotra, with scores of 46, 49 and 129, impressed as well.
