No spinners were sold as franchises focused on getting Indian bowlers and all-rounders in the second round of bidding at the IPL auction in Bengaluru on Saturday.
South African all-rounder Chris Morris was the highest sold player with Delhi Daredevils buying him for Rs 7 crore. Along with Morris, Delhi also bought wicket-keeper Sanju Samson for Rs 4.2 crore. “He’s a very good bowler and can bat a bit. He can bowl upfront and in the death and is a matchwinner,” said Delhi Daredevil’s TA Sekar.
Indian medium pacers held centrestage as Mohit Sharma and Praveen Kumar attracted huge bids. Kings XI Punjab seemed bent on getting him as they straightaway started the bidding. KKR joined the bidding but quit at the Rs 4.8 crore mark. Sunrisers Hyderabad, however, suddenly joined the bidding and it forced Punjab to raise their bid to R 6.5 crore.
KKR were interested in Kumar too but Rajkot seemed more determined to get a pacer who is good at the end. Rajkot eventually got him for Rs 3.5 crore, a tad too expensive maybe but then they also got Dinesh Karthik at a bargain buy of Rs 2.3 crore. Rajkot further boosted their bowling with Dhawal Kulkarni for Rs 2 crore. Another bargain buy was Irfan Pathan, who went to Pune for his base price of Rs 1 crore. Stuart Binny too went to RCB for his base price of Rs 2 crore.
KKR’s first successful bid in this round was that of New Zealand’s Colin Munro and they got him at a steal, for just Rs 30 lakh. They then added Australian bowler John Hastings for Rs 1.3 crore. New Zealand pacer Tim Southee went to Mumbai for Rs 2.5 crore. There was hectic bidding for Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh between KXIP and Pune before the latter bought him for Rs 4.8 crore.
