Highlights: KL Rahul’s scintillating 36-ball-71 paved the way for a consolation six-wicket victory for Kings XI Punjab in Mohali on Sunday but not before CSK ensured a top-two finish with chance to play the first IPL Qualifier at their happy hunting home ground Chepauk. With nothing to lose in the final game of the season, Rahul, Chris Gayle (28 off 28 balls) and Nicholas Pooran (36 off 22 balls) were the key contributors in KXIP’s successful chase of 171 in in 18 overs. However CSK will be happy that with a net run-rate of +0.131 which is far better than Delhi Capitals’ (+0.044), the defending champions will remain in the top two with two clear shots at summit clash qualification even if MI beat KKR in the evening game. (Full scorecard)
Follow KXIP vs CSK highlights:
Kings XI Punjab win by six wickets
Curran smashes Tahir for a boundary as Kings XI Punjab beat Chennai Super Kings by six wickets. They have won the match with two overs to spare.
Jadeja dismisses Pooran
Pooran nicks a delivery from Jadeja and Dhoni takes a sharp catch behind the stumps. The Kings XI Punjab need 7 from 21 balls to win.
Chennai book a top two finish
Punjab needed to chase down their target in 14.1 overs to bring Chennai’s run rate below Delhi’s. However, the Chennai Super Kings have managed to restrict Punjab as they need 20 more runs from the last five overs. CSK have booked a top two finish in the league.
Harbhajan sets the stage on fire
Harbhajan gets another wicket! Agarwal tries to pounce on a short ball and presents a catch for Jadeja in the deep. The KXIP batsman departs for seven runs.
Harbhajan strikes again!
Gayle goes after Harbhajan this time and presents a catch to Shorey. The West Indian goes for 28 runs from 28 balls. The off-spinner picks up two wickets in two balls!
Rahul departs for 71 runs
KL Rahul takes on Harbhajan Singh and loops a catch to Imran Tahir. The opening batsman goes for a well made 71 runs. KXIP: 108/1 in 10.3 overs.
Punjab reach 90/0 in 8 overs
Dwayne Bravo pulls things back a bit for the Chennai Super Kings with a tight over. He concedes just five runs as Punjab reach 90/0 in 8 overs.
Gayle and Rahul power Punjab on
Gayle joins the party as he smashes Tahir for a boundary and a six. The Kings XI Punjab are cruising towards their target at the moment.
Rahul hits Harbhajan for 24 runs
4, 4, 4, . 6, 6: KL Rahul tears apart Harbhajan Singh, some scintillating hitting from the right-hander. He also gets to his fifty off just 19 balls. KXIP: 57/0 after 4 overs.
No respite for Chahar
A couple of boundaries from Deepak Chahar’s second over. Rahul looks to be in fantastic touch. This is the kind of start Ashwin was mentioning about after their loss in the last game. KXIP: 33/0 after 3 overs.
Great start by KXIP openers
23 runs from the first 2 overs. They might not have a realistic chance of making it to the playoffs but Kings XI are going for it. Rahul hits Harbhajan for a couple of sixes and Gayle seems to be in good touch too. KXIP 24/0 after 2 overs
Outstanding last over from Shami
5 runs and two wickets from the 20th over. Kings XI Punjab would be mighty pleased with the last few overs. CSK finish with 170/5, batting first at Mohali.
Du Plessis misses a hundred
BOWLED! Du Plessis won’t get a hundred. You’ve got to feel for the man here. It was a brilliant innings and he deserved a hundred but it wasn’t to be. An absolute peach of a delivery from Sam Curran, nothing much that du Plessis could have done there. It was just the perfect yorker aimed right at the toes and it trickles onto the stumps after hitting the pads. Du Plessis goes for 96.
Good spell from R Ashwin
Would you believe it! Only 4 runs from 18th over and R Ashwin finishes his quota of 4 over with figures of none for 23, great performance from the KXIP captain. But CSK need a big finish here.
Raina falls for 53
OUT! Great thinking from Sam Curran, roles his finger over it and Raina hits it straight to Shami and short fine-leg. End of a very good innings from the experienced left-hander, he goes for 53, CSK have lost their 2nd wicket - both belongs to Curran.
Du Plesss goes berserk
3 fours and 2 sixes! Faf du Plessis has gone berserk after reaching his fifty. He has taken apart M Ashwin and Andrew Tye. 36 runs from the last 2 overs. Brace yourself for something big here. CSK: 142/1 after 16 overs.
Raina gets to his fifty
Another good over from Ashwin
How good has been Ashwin for KXIP this season? He has been very difficult to get away with and today once again he’s proving to be the most difficult bowler to score runs from. Only 5 runs from his third over. CSK:106/1 after 14 overs
FIFTY For Faf!
Good over from Tye
Good stuff from Andrew Tye. He did waste the review but Ashwin won’t be that disappointed from his Australian fast bowler. Only 7 runs from it. CSK 97/1 after 12 overs.
Close call for Faf
NOT OUT! Beauty of a delivery by Murugan Ashwin. He slows it up in the air and lands it full around off. Du Plessis stretches forward to play the slog sweep but it spins away slightly to beat the outside edge. Pooran is quick to take the bails off and appeals. The square leg umpire goes upstairs and the replays find Faf safely in.
CSK getting a move on
Some attacking intent from both du Plessis and Raina. Both of them pick up a boundary each from Shami’s over. 12 runs from it. CSK 79/1 after 10 overs
10 runs from the 9th
Suresh Raina hit a six off Brar - his second of Brar’s bowling. The other five deliveries resulted in four singles. The umpire’s signal for the first strategic time out. CSK 67/1 after 9 overs.
Raina hits Brar for six
CSK needed that didn’t they and Raina even more. He was stuck in the middle and then finally decides to give the charge to young Brar and makes solid connection. The balls sails over the long-on boundary for a maximum.
CSK 42/1 at Powerplay
Ashwin’s first over goes for only 6 runs, one boundary from Suresh Raina in it. CSK have reached 42 for 1 at the end of six overs. A slow beginning? May be but that has been the CSK way so far.
BOWLED! Beautiful from Sam Curran. That was the fullest delivery he bowled in the match so far and it pays dividends. Watson did not judge the length properly, it was neither too wide nor too short to cut and it crashes onto his stumps. Watson’s torrid time in IPL 2019 continues.
Good period for CSK
Just the start Dhoni and CSK were looking for. Watson and du Plessis have taken CSK to 30 runs after 4 overs by playing risk-free cricket.
Shami starts well
Good comeback by Shami after the boundary from his first ball. He gives away only 3 runs from his next five balls. But Watson and du Plessis are looking solid as ever. CSK: 14/0 after 2 overs.
3 singles and a four
Harpreet Brar’s first over goes for 7 runs. Shane Watson hit the youngster for a boundary past the cover point fielder in the fourth ball of the over but apart from that, Brar was on the mark. CSK: 7/0
Out walk the players
Kings XI Punjab team has walked out followed by the CSK openers. There is a concern with the CSK batting and the openers need to start well. Young left-arm spinner Harpreet Singh Brar to start the proceedings for KXIP.
Chennai Super Kings (Playing XI): Faf du Plessis, Shane Watson, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni(w/c), Kedar Jadhav, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Deepak Chahar, Harbhajan Singh, Imran Tahir
Kings XI Punjab (Playing XI): Chris Gayle, Lokesh Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Nicholas Pooran(w), Mandeep Singh, Sam Curran, Harpreet Brar, Ravichandran Ashwin(c), Andrew Tye, Murugan Ashwin, Mohammed Shami
KXIP bowl first
MS Dhoni: Nothing really has changed. Last game in the league and it is to sort things out before the important phase. We are playing the same squad.
Ravichandran Ashwin: We will be bowling first. We have not used all the wickets. Every game is important for the franchise. We have only one change.
It is so hot, the curator is confidence enough to put some water on the surface two and half hours before the game. He says it is like ironing a shirt. It looks a good surface. This is the ground where it has turned the least for the spinners and Chennai need to adapt. You want to know what you are chasing at this ground - Pommie Mbangwa
Concern for CSK
Barring MS Dhoni and to some extent, Suresh Raina, the rest of the CSK batting order has failed to fire all season. The bowlers have been brilliant which is why they are at this position.

Ashwin would want to finish on a high
The KXIP captain has won accolades for his captaincy this season, but it has not been enough to inspire his side to make it to the playoffs. However, he is a proud man and would want to end this season on a high and would want his team to make on final push with conviction.
KXIP predicted XI
Shami, who picked up an injury in the previous match, could miss out. Karun Nair could get a game for KXIP.

CSK- Workload management will be an issue
Dhoni, who has been struggling with his back, could sit out and regain full fitness before the playoffs. Also, since the game will be played on a flat pitch in Mohali, Harbhajan Singh could sit this one out.
