New Zealand vs South Africa 4th T20I Highlights: Coetzee took the final wicket of the New Zealand innings to help South Africa to a 19-run win in Wellington. Connor Esterhuizen, who earlier hit his maiden T20I fifty, has been chosen Man of the Match. He also took two catches. Maharaj was pleased as punch. “I think the way the debutant (Subrayen) took two wickets was fantastic. There were dropped catches but there was no panic. There were no pre-planned ideas coming in and the guys just adapted,” he said after the game. See you on March 25 for the decider.
Subrayen and Maharaj have turned the match on its head. Subrayen accounted for Cleaver and Bevon Jacobs and then Maharaj removed Kelly and McConchie. Spin is making a big difference in this contest. Surely, it's all over bar the shouting for the home side.
Coetzee accounts for Robinson in the last over of the powerplay but Cleaver hits some big shots later in the over to make it even-stevens. The home side is the favourite to take this game at this moment. The South African bowling looks quite impotent and the dew on the ground could be one of the reasons. More than 60 runs for the Kiwis at the end of the powerplay.
Good start by the Kiwis before Katene Clarke is dispatched by Wiaan Mulder in the third over. However, Tim Robinson looks imperious at the other end as he takes 15 runs off the first over bowled by George Linde. The Proteas need to remove him quickly to make a match of it.
Ben Sears concedes just two runs in his last over as South Africa finish their innings on 164/5. Hermann and Linde looked totally helpless against the bowling talent of Sears. Sears came up with figures of 1/23, varying his pace a lot. At this stage, the home side will fancy its chances. The visitors are at least 15 runs short. Mind you, there is plenty of dew all around. It will be difficult for the Proteas bowlers to defend this.
New Zealand have really bowled well in the last few overs. They have put the brakes on the South African innings. Even though there is plenty of dew, they have shown tremendous control with the ball. Forrester has been sent back too, by Foulkes off the last ball of the 15th over. The visitors need to score a 170 plus total to have any chance against the home side.
Esterhuizen departs after scoring 57 runs off 36 balls. He had slowed down as he reached closer to his fifty. Which is understandable, it was his first fifty in international T20s. Ben Sears, after conceding two fours, saw the back of him in the 10th over. Some kind of comeback for the Kiwis. Ever since the fall of Wiaan Mulder, they have been chasing leather. Here is another wicket for them, this time de Zorzi goes off the bowling of McConchie. He goes for 23. Good comeback by the Kiwis. Rubin Hermann and Dian Forrester now have the responsibility on their shoulders to take the visitors to a competitive total.
Wiaan Mulder was sent back for a duck by Kyle Jamieson off the second ball of the match but after that Proteas have been awfully solid all thanks to Connor Esterhuizen. At the end of the powerplay the visitors are looking good at 50/1.
New Zealand and South Africa meet in Wellington for the fourth T20I, with the shape of the series now sharply defined. After South Africa stormed through the opener, New Zealand have hit back with wins in Hamilton and Auckland to move 2-1 ahead in the five-match contest. That has turned this into a pivotal match of the tour: a New Zealand win would seal the series with a game to spare, while South Africa need a response to force the battle into a decider.
What has shifted over the last two matches is New Zealand's control. Devon Conway set the tone in the second T20I with a stabilising half-century as the hosts levelled the series, and they followed that up with an even more assured display in the third game. Chasing 137 in Auckland, New Zealand, got home by eight wickets with 22 balls to spare. That win underlined how much more settled New Zealand have looked since recovering from the collapse in the first match.
South Africa, though, still have enough in this series to make New Zealand wary. Their fast bowlers hit hard in the opener and exposed the hosts, reducing them to 36 for 5 before bowling them out for just 91. That result remains the strongest reminder of what this South African side can do when they seize the powerplay and keep pressure on through the middle overs. But since then, their challenge has been consistency. They have not quite sustained the same intensity across both innings, and the fourth match now demands a far tighter performance with both bat and ball.
