Ross Taylor

Age 42SamoaSAMOA
Right Handed Batsman

A strong bottom hand, compact technique and an appetite for the big shot made Ross Taylor a distinctive presence at the crease. He could work an innings with patience before suddenly opening his shoulders and putting an attack under pressure. That ability to absorb and explode became one of the defining traits of his batting.

Ross made his international debut in 2006 and quickly showed that he belonged at the highest level. He scored his maiden ODI century later that year against Sri Lanka and followed it by making his Test debut against South Africa in 2007. After a difficult start in Tests, he found his feet during the home series against England in 2008, scoring his maiden Test century before reinforcing his credentials with 154 at Old Trafford later that summer.

Taylor's most memorable World Cup innings came at Pallekele in 2011, on his 27th birthday, when he survived several chances before launching a stunning late assault against Pakistan. The ferocity of the onslaught earned him the moniker 'The Pallekele Plunderer', as commentators dubbed him that day. Following the 2011 World Cup, Vettori stepped down and Taylor took over as captain across all three formats in June 2011.

After a difficult period as captain, Taylor declined the Test captaincy when New Zealand Cricket proposed splitting the leadership role and took a break from international cricket in December 2012 before returning to the side in 2013. Taylor's defining Test performance came in Perth in 2015, when he smashed 290 against Australia. He also played important roles in New Zealand's runs to the 2015 and 2019 World Cup finals before helping them win the inaugural World Test Championship in 2021. Taylor's longevity was reflected in 100 international appearances across each of the three formats.

Alongside his international career, Taylor featured extensively in franchise cricket, representing teams in the IPL and CPL. His career was also marked by individual recognition, including three Sir Richard Hadlee Medals and appointment as a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to cricket and Pacific communities. He retired from international cricket in 2022 after scoring 18,244 runs across the formats. His later appearance for Samoa, through his Samoan heritage, added an unexpected final chapter to an international career that had begun with New Zealand in 2006.
