Right Handed All Rounder

West Indies cricket in the 1970s and 1980s had no shortage of dominant figures, but Viv Richards carried an aura that set him apart even in that company. He walked to the crease without a helmet throughout his career, his maroon West Indies cap tilted slightly to one side, chewing gum with an unhurried air that bowlers came to read as a warning rather than a habit. He treated the fastest bowling attacks of the era and the most testing spin with much the same disdain, and few players before or since have unsettled opponents simply by the manner of their arrival at the crease.

Born in St John's, Antigua, he was sent to England on a coaching scholarship as a young player before joining Somerset in 1974. The same year, he made his Test debut for the West Indies against India in Bangalore at the age of 22. He announced himself properly in his very next Test, in Delhi, with an unbeaten 192. The following years established him as one of the finest batters the game had seen. In 1976, he produced 7 scores of 100 or more in a single calendar year. That tally broke Garfield Sobers's previous record of six and stood as the benchmark for three decades before being surpassed. The same year brought twin double centuries against England, including a career-best 291 at The Oval. He finished that calendar year with 1,710 Test runs, itself a long-standing record before later being overtaken.

Richards played a key role in the field during the West Indies' 1975 World Cup final win over Australia, running out three batters. A spell followed in Kerry Packer's World Series Cricket in 1977-78 and 1978-79, where he scored heavily against the game's best fast bowlers. He returned to West Indies colours in time for the 1979 World Cup, which the side won for a second time. He carried that form into the new decade, remaining one of the most prolific batters in the world through the early 1980s. His white-ball batting peaked at the 1983 World Cup, where he was among the tournament's leading run-scorers, though West Indies went on to lose the final to India. He kept up the same standard in Tests through the following seasons.

Richards took over the West Indies captaincy from Clive Lloyd in 1985 and never lost a Test series in charge of the side. The signature moment of his captaincy came a year into the job, when he reached a Test century off just 56 balls against England at his home ground in Antigua. That mark stood as the fastest in the format for nearly three decades before eventually being broken. Alongside his time with West Indies, he built a long domestic career. He represented Somerset for over a decade, where he formed a formidable trio with Ian Botham and Joel Garner. That trio helped the county win its first major trophies, including the 1979 Gillette Cup, in which he top-scored with 117 and was named Man of the Match.

Vivian also had a spell with Queensland in the 1976-77 season and later with Glamorgan in the early 1990s, finishing his first-class career with over 36,000 runs. He received an OBE in 1990 before being knighted in 1999 for his services to cricket, the same year he was named one of Wisden's five Cricketers of the Century. He also founded the Sir Vivian Richards Foundation in 2004, a charity supporting young and underprivileged people in Antigua through sport. Since retiring, Richards has stayed closely involved in the game. Richards also coached the Antigua Hawksbills during the inaugural 2013 season of the Caribbean Premier League and later served as a team mentor for the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL and Quetta Gladiators in the PSL. In 2025, he was brought in alongside Brian Lara and Richie Richardson to advise the senior West Indies team following a heavy Test defeat to Australia.
