Man-of-the-Match Markram credited his bowlers for the victory at the post-match. “We actually bowled pretty well, obviously the powerplay was a big thing for us, to get off nicely. The partnership with Quinny [worked well]. The second innings was good to bat on, it was slightly tacky early on and the guys bowled pretty well early on,” he said.
Another fifty-run stand comes to pass for South Africa, between Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton. The Proteas need a run a ball at this moment, at the completion of the 13th over. But they would look to finish it much earlier in order to improve their net run rate. The match started with a lot of hype but at present it has become a lukewarm contest.
Quinton de Kock departs for 47 but it's 50 for Aiden Markram at the other end. The Proteas reach 100 without much fuss. Only a miracle from here can help the West Indies. At present, they look totally demoralised. Ryan Rickelton has joined Markram after De Kock's exit.
Aiden Markram is dropped by Brandon King in the fourth over. Will the Windies rue the missed opportunity? He has looked in good touch right from the get go. West Indies need a couple of wickets to make a match of it, if truth be told. The pitch is not exactly conducive for shot-making but if one shows patience, it rewards like it did with Shepherd and Holder.
What a comeback by the Windies! The 89-run eighth-wicket stand off 59 balls between Romario Shepherd and Jason Holder ensured the Windies put up a competitive 176 after stuttering early on. Shepherd remained unbeaten on 52 off 37 balls. Holder fell just one run short of a fifty. It was an unfortunate run-out in the last over. Can the Proteas chase it down now? Indian fans would hope so.
Romario Shepherd and Jason Holder put up a small partnership. West Indies can now hope to get 150 but for that they have to be on point, can't afford to make more mistakes. Over-aggression has been their undoing so far.
There has been no attempt from the Caribbean team to get up a partnership. As a result, things look really bad for them. It's been a no contest so far. With seven wickets down for 80-odd, they will be lucky to get even 120.
Half the West Indian side is back in the dugout. Corbin Bosch is the latest to take a wicket. Sherfane Rutherford departs after a top edge. Quinton de Kock takes an easy catch behind the wicket. The Windies need a partnership now.
Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi take two each to rattle the Caribbean team. There have been two dropped catches too, one by Corbin Bosch and one by Lungi Ngidi. So far it has been very frenetic. No time to catch your breath. Indian fans wouldn't mind this. Just the thing they wanted.
West Indies openers have been super aggressive so far. 17 runs from the first over by Keshav Maharaj, 12 from the second by Marco Jansen. Just not the start India fans would have wanted!
Hang on Kagiso Rabada removes Hope off the second ball of the third over. Quinton de Kock takes a nice catch behind the wicket. Another wicket off the penultimate ball. Maharaja takes a nice catch at mid-wicket. The dangerous Shemron Hetmyer walks. West Indies in trouble.
One change for West Indies. Roston Chase comes in for Akeal Hosein. South Africa are unchanged on the other side. West Indies captain Shai Hope says his side is up for this encounter. He is hoping to bat just the way they did against Zimbabwe in their last game. There is a bit of a grass on the pitch and that may have influenced the Caribbean team to bring in Chase for Hosein.
Who would have thought at the start of the Super 8s that the West Indies-South Africa encounter today at Ahmedabad at 3 PM (IST) would garner so much attention in India? But after the 76-run drubbing at the hands of South Africa, India don't have their destiny entirely in their own hands, so the SA-WI tie becomes very important for them.
India are playing later today against Zimbabwe but before that, they would want South Africa to beat the West Indies. If that happens, all they need are wins against Zimbabwe and the Caribbean team (on March 1 in Kolkata) to qualify for the semis, but if the West Indies, who thrashed Zimbabwe by 107 runs in their first Super 8 game, somehow beat South Africa today, India will not only have to win their remaining two games but also ensure they win handsomely, so as to have a better net-run rate than both South Africa and the West Indies, at least better than one of them to qualify for the semis. India's net run rate at present is in the negative, that is -3.800.
India's batting has been a worry more or less all through the tournament so far but against South Africa it reached its nadir as chasing 188 to win, Suryakumar Yadav's men folded for just 111 in the 19th over, their worst defeat in the history of the T20 World Cup, by runs that is.
Meanwhile, whoever wins today between South Africa and the West Indies, they will have one foot in the semis, make no mistake.
