His loss became his country's and Test cricket's gain as he notched up a record-breaking score on Day 2 of the first Test against Bangladesh.

Taylor's 171 was the highest individual score by a Zimbabwe skipper, eclipsing Andy Flower's 156 against Pakistan in 1995.

What made it sweet was that it came on Zimbabwe's Independence Day. Taylor's eight-hour knock formed the backbone in a Zimbabwean total of 389, before Bangladesh responded to go to stumps on 95/1.
