Known for his aggressive batting and ability to hit sixes at will, he was a crowd favourite wherever he played during his 21-year long international career.

But Afridi’s popularity is not confined just to traditional cricket playing nations. Even in the United States of America where cricket is not that popular, February 5 is celebrated as Shahid Afridi Day in the city of Port Arthur, Texas.

Touched by this gesture, Afridi took to his official Instagram account on Wednesday to thank the mayor of Port Arthur for the honour which was bestowed upon him back in 2014.

Afridi first shot to limelight at the young age of 16 when he blasted the then-fastest hundred in ODIs off just 37 balls against Sri Lanka.

Over the next two decades, he was an integral part of Pakistan team in limited-overs cricket and was even instrumental in helping them win the T20 World Championship in 2009.
