Watch: Massive confusion over Umran Malik's fastest ball by an Indian, Hindi, English broadcasts show different speeds

Jan 11, 2023 10:01 AM IST

Umran Malik bowled a 156kph delivery with which he broke his own record for the fastest ball by an India bowler. But he may not get the credit for it as the official Hindi and English language broadcasts created major confusion by showing different results on the speed gun for the same delivery.

Umran Malik has not just impressed with pace, but also with wickets. In the first ODI match between India and Sri Lanka at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, Umran finished with figures of 3 for 57 in eight overs as India won by 67 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-game contest. But what left his name trending across social media platforms on Tuesday night was his thunderbolt delivery of 156kph with which he broke his own record for the fastest delivery by an India bowler. But he may not get the credit for it as the official Hindi and English language broadcasts created major confusion by showing different results on the speed gun for the same delivery.

Introduced right after the powerplay, Umran delivered that record ball in the fourth delivery of his second over, which was the 14th over of Sri Lanka's chase. The Hindi broadcast did not show anything on the speed gun, visible at the bottom of the screen when Umran bowled the fourth ball of the over but moments later, it showed the speeds of each delivery of that over, which marked the fourth ball to be 156 kph. It was fuller in length and around off as Sri Lanka batter Charith Asalanka punched it through the covers for two singles.

In the English broadcast, however, the same delivery was clocked at 145.7 kph.

This created major confusion and raised doubts over the actual speed of the delivery bowled by Umran. If it was indeed 156 kph then Umran now owns the record for the fastest delivery by an Indian in T20Is, ODIs and in the IPL as well. His fastest delivery in T20Is is of 155kmph, which he recorded six nights back against Sri Lanka. However, his fastest delivery was in the IPL, when he touched 157kph in a match against Mumbai Indians.

He ended that over by dismissing Asalanka in the final ball. It was short and banged down the leg-stump line as the batter looked to glance it away but ended up feathering it as wicketkeeper KL Rahul completed the dismissal. Umran however was lucky enough with that dismissal as UltraEdge later showed that there was no bat involved.

He also dismissed Pathum Nissanka for 72 in the 31st over and Wellalage for a duck in the very next over.

“I have played 6 games, I just want to bowl well and in the right areas. The wicket was flat, I spoke with Siraj bhai, Shami bhai, and the input was to make the most of my pace. I want to be as accurate as possible,” he said after India's win.
