Currently lodged in the district jail at Suddhowala on judicial custody, Dr Amit was arrested at Panchkula in Haryana on September 15 -- four days after the racket was busted on September 11 at the Gangotri Charitable Hospital at Lal Tappad, 30 km from Dehradun. The judicial custody ends on September 30.

“We were busy with VIP (President Ramnath Kovind and BJP chief Amit Shah) visits and will now apply for the grant of police custody (at the court) on Monday,” Dehradun senior superintendent of police (SSP) Nivedita Kukreti Kumar told Hindustan Times. “Once we get the remand, we’ll interrogate him in detail (regarding the kidney racket) besides cross questioning him and trying to supplement what he had said earlier.”

“We’ve spoken with the CBI in connection with the case because it had investigated (the Gurugram racket) earlier. Apart from that, the Gujarat police will be coming to Dehradun as Dr Amit is a wanted criminal there,” Kumar said.

The police have arrested 12 accused so far, while at least three others -- all doctors -- continue to be at large.
