Denied money for alcohol, a man allegedly killed his 75-year-old mother and younger brother at their home in west Delhi’s Uttam Nagar Tuesday night, police said.

After assaulting them, Arora allegedly sat next to his bleeding mother and brother and smoked a beedi before some policemen and local residents overpowered him, an eyewitness, who did not wish to be named, said.

Arora lived with his younger brother, 48-year-old Rajendra, and mother, Lata, in Vishwas Park of Uttam Nagar. The two brothers were divorcees and lived off their mother’s money. Their father had died years ago.

“Lata had sold a house some years ago and the family was living off the interest earned from that money. Arora suspected his mother of giving a larger share of the money to Rajendra,” Anto Alphonse, deputy commissioner of police (Dwarka), said.

According to Naresh Singh, a local who witnessed the murder, the family often quarrelled in public over the money. On Tuesday night, the DCP said, the fight began when Lata refused to give Arora money to buy alcohol.

“When other residents and I confronted Sunil outside his house, he was armed with a knife. We tried to intervene, but he said it was his family affair and that he would attack us if we intervened. We were frightened,” Singh said.

Arora then allegedly stabbed Rajendra again before dragging him upstairs to their house on the first floor. One of the neighbours called the police control room, but Singh just then happened to notice two policemen passing by.

Accompanied by the policemen, the neighbours marched into the flat. “Rajendra had collapsed on a chair with multiple stab injuries and other wounds. His mother was lying bleeding on the floor. Sunil was sitting next to their bodies and calmly smoking a beedi,” Singh said.

Arora was overpowered by the policemen even as the injured mother and son were rushed to a hospital. Rajendra was declared dead on arrival while his mother died within minutes of being admitted there.

A senior investigator said two knives, a pair of bent scissors and a laundry bat were used in the double murder.

“When one of the knives bent during the attack, Arora brought another knife from the kitchen to carry on with the assault. Even the pair of scissors was bent with the intensity of the attack,” the officer said.
