The Lok Sabha once again took action against an errant MP. It reprimanded RJD member Rajesh Kumar Manjhi and suspended him for 30 sittings of the House for taking a woman friend on an official tour as his wife. The House also restrained him from taking his spouse or companion on official tours till the end of the 14th Lok Sabha session.
The whole House endorsed with voice vote the punishment given to the MP through a motion moved by Leader of the House Pranab Mukherjee. He said he was moving the motion with a “heavy heart.”
Earlier, the House had expelled 10 MPs following the cash-for-query scam and acted against those implicated in the MPLADs scandal.
Speaker Somnath Chatterjee referred to the latest controversy involving a member as a “very sorry incident.”
In its report last week, the committee to inquire into the misconduct of members of the Lok Sabha said that the Gaya MP's action of presenting a woman friend as his wife while flying from Delhi to Mumbai on Marcy 23, 2006 and February 21, 2007 was “tantamount to cheating and impersonating.”
“These are penal offences as well as a conduct unbecoming of a member,” said the committee headed by Kishore Chandra Deo. It said that Manjhi had “blatantly misused” the facilities entitled to an MP during official tours. It accused the member of prevaricating, suppressing the truth and deliberately misleading the committee under oath when called to give evidence.
