Police 'clean' city of criminals for Commonwealth Games

The proclaimed offenders of the Capital are being systematically rounded up by the Delhi Police and arrested for various offences. Keeping in mind that there are just 113 days left for the mega sporting event, the police are nabbing every known criminal operating in the Capital and neighbouring states.

In the last three months, more than 500 proclaimed offenders have been arrested. The police are also exchanging intelligence and daily crime bulletin with their counterparts in Haryana, Rajasthan, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh and conducting operations to arrest as many criminals as possible before the Games.

The police fear that these anti-social elements might end up causing trouble during the event this October.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Neeraj Kumar said, "They are being apprehended following a drive initiated ahead of the Commonwealth Games to catch active criminals in neighbouring states who have the potential to indulge in crime in Delhi."

Most of the arrested criminals have a reward of at least Rs 5,000 on their heads.

According to senior police officers, the drive has been intensified in the last few months. "We have arrested as many as 150 proclaimed offenders in the last three months. Keeping in mind the Commonwealth Games, we are being extra cautious," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Jaspal Singh.
