When Rishi Kapoor revealed father Raj Kapoor's words of wisdom for him: ‘I’m your dad, not your secretary'

Rishi Kapoor once said that his father Raj Kapoor made it clear that he wasn't his secretary, and that he would be responsible for his own career.

Rishi Kapoor belongs to the First Family of Indian cinema – the Kapoors. In a 2016 interview, he proudly declared that his family had been involved in filmmaking for nearly the entire history of movies.

Actor Rishi Kapoor died on April 30 last year after a prolonged illness.

On Rishi Kapoor's 69th birth anniversary, here's a throwback to when he spoke about the words of wisdom his father shared with him; advice that he passed on to his son, Ranbir Kapoor.

He told The Print, “People ask me where I learned acting, if I went to a school or an institution. I tell them that there can never be a bigger institution that the Kapoors. Never did my father behave like he was my secretary, or choose subjects for me. He said, ‘I have given this boy a break, and now he’s on his own; he will fall, he will get up, he will take care of himself; that's how he'll learn about life'. He said, ‘I'm your father, not your secretary'. I have continued with that, with my son.”

Rishi died in 2020 after a two-year battle with cancer. He'd spent the majority of his final years in the US, undergoing treatment. His wife Neetu Kapoor and his children, Ranbir and Riddhima Kapoor Sahni, paid him several visits and stood by in support.
