What do you do when the mess food in your hostel doesn’t excite your taste buds? Well, for starters, you could take over the management of the mess. You could also open a snack corner and provide the college students with some decent food. Just like these three ex-Wilson students.
Franco Parakka, Prajakta Palande and Stanley Thomas recently opened a snack corner at Wilson College. The joint, housed in a small room inside St. Andrew’s Hostel, is accessible to both college students and hostel dwellers. Food options include paneer chops, mayo rolls, masala corn for vegetarians, and rolls and burgers for non-vegetarians.
Says Franco Parakka, who is currently doing his Masters in Economics from Mumbai University, “We wanted to provide the students with some snack items that can be eaten on-the-go. Every morning, we cook the food ourselves. The crowd has taken a great liking to the chicken chops and pepper mayo rolls.”
Just a few weeks old, the joint is already popular amongst the students. And, with the food priced almost the same as the fare available in the college canteen, it is difficult to keep hungry students away. “One day, we almost sold all the food by afternoon. Just then, two students came to us and each of them wanted the last portion of chicken chops. So we decided to have an auction and give it to the student with the highest bid. But, we never got to that, as one of them grabbed the plate and ran away!” recalls Franco.
And, if the hostel dwellers are to be believed, the mess food also tastes much better after the students took over the organisation and brought in their own cooks.
“Earlier, there used to be one item for breakfast every day like poha or upma. Now, there is a variety of food like hot sausages, salami pav and veg omelette. So, there is something for everybody. And, if you’re in a rush, you could always grab bread and butter and head out,” says Jason James, a second year BMS student.
