Designer Amy Billimoria to use only old, recycled outfits at her show.

Designer Amy Billimoria will devote her forthcoming fashion show to spread word about global warming. She has recycled old clothes to make new ones, and will showcase them at The Club on January 23. To help the cause, numerous celebrities from Mumbai have donated items like discarded scarves with

phulkari

embroidery, brass, pieces of old necklaces, lace saris and embroideries which will be taken out from old outfits and transferred to new ones using hand appliqué techniques.

The used clothes have been created into stunning evening gowns to be worn by celebrities. These outfits won’t be put up for sale. Says Amy, “I hope the effort is taken as a trend. I think most people should recycle their old garments to create their new look.” The show will also showcase Amy’s signature line of drapes and cocktail wear.

Adds Amy, “As a designer, I feel that my profession can go a long way in helping for the cause of global warming. I was inspired for this show after attending an International SDC (Society of Dyers and Colourists) conference where astonishing figures came to our notice about how much electricity and water is used in the production of a simple T-shirt when it gets slightly faded or stained. The same goes for other outfits and saris.”
