Patriotism and everything Indian ruled the ramp on Day three of Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai. Visuals and imprints of Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters, kurtas and even the use of rudraksh, all told a rich Indian story.
Designer Sanjay Hingu showed a line that was peppered with Gandhi visuals and imprints. Designer Kunal Rawal’s collection appeared with a strong 1940s touch with Nehru jackets and kurtas teamed with blazers. Designer duo Rohit and Abhishek displayed slim fit blazers sporting buttons with Gandhi visuals.
The Indian inspiration with special emphasis on trends from the independence and pre-independence era was imminent. Reasoned Rohit, “India is becoming a big power around the world and the leader of this power is Gandhi, so to show my collection ‘The new pure man’, somebody powerful like Gandhiji was imperative.”
Designer Krishna Mehta’s models strutted around in linen kurtas accessorised with heavy rudraksh neckpieces. The designer even got a sadhu to walk the ramp.
The inspiration behind Hingu’s collection was a movie on freedom fighters. “My collection is inspired by the struggle of India, which I have put in a modern way with sleek wearable silhouettes,” said Hingu and added, “India is in the limelight, everybody wants a bit of India, why not we Indians do that? We wear Che Guevara on tees, it’s time to adorn our country’s heroes.”
