They may be fashion forward, but when it comes to experimenting with their mane, most Indian women chicken out, says celebrity hair stylist Adhuna Akhtar, who was in the city to promote her maiden TV show, Be Blunt.
“Hair is an important part of one’s sex appeal but in India, long hair is synonymous with beauty among women. Girls are very conservative about cutting their hair and stick to shoulder-length straight hair which could be a tad boring,” says Akhtar, who feels that shorter hairstlye can look great on Indian women.
Interestingly, Akhtar praised Indian men for trying different looks — from spikes to ruffled hair and different types of beards — stubble or French. “Surprisingly it’s men who don’t mind being experimental,” she says.
Talking about her new show that premieres on TLC today, Akhtar says, “We have chosen six girls from different walks of life and we’ll give them a hair makeover depending on their features, quality of hair and profession.”
When asked if she styles her husband, actor-filmmaker Farhan’s Akhtar’s hair too, she says, “I used to style most of his looks, but now he is happy with my staff doing the job. His father says that before Farhan met me, he didn’t really have a hairstyle”.
